I thought I might try one of these iPhone Four things they're banging on about on the telly, and was wondering whether any of you could offer advice regarding the best carrier to sign-up with? I am income rich and cash poor, so I would be looking for a system which bundles in some of the cost of the phone with higher monthly payments ( Read more... )

Humanity has yet to develop a phone that is worth abandoning a £4 a month tariff for. Maybe when they finally develop the one that interfaces directly with your brain via the optic nerve and includes x-ray vision as standard, but only maybe.

Gotta agree with this. How on earth do you manage a tariff like that?

OTOH, I don't think I'd give up my unlimited internet access and touch-screen phone now for anything, even £4 a month. It is just so astonishingly handy.

Do you definitely want an iPhone, or is it more the features you're after? (I'm sure Brock will have a few things to say from here)

It's a special deal through work, such that there's no monthly charge and it's a penny per text and minimal costs for phonecalls.

However - Abi's point is correct, which is that a bog standard Nokia phone isn't anywhere near as rewarding as an iPhone which gives you internet access, music, Spotify etc... I'm not looking to replace Cheap Phone with Expensive Phone, I'm seeking to replace Cheap Phone with Reasonably Priced Portable Internet.

What's reasonably priced? I pay £32 a month (including calls) for my portable internet (on Android though, not iPhone).

You can get a similar deal on the iPhone, but I think you still have to pay for the handset (though An Expert will no doubt be able to educate you further!)

I left Orange in 2008 because they were cunts, and have since heard nothing about them to make me imagine they've changed. Of course, this is an argument from lack of anecdotal evidence, but it's all I have.

Personally, I am on O2 and as mobile phone carriers go I deem them predictably flawed but generally fine. You might like also to consider the HTC Desire as a possible alternative to the iPhone 4? According to this report, iPhone users have more sex than Android users, and I know you like to sleep in.

Oh. No, boo to Orange then. What made them cunts?

The OK Cupid data is extremely flawed - it doesn't take into account that the iPhone comes preinstalled with a free copy of the RapeMe app, whereby rapists with iRape can track potential victims on a user-friendly map.

Some of the story is told here. This level of customer service persisted for a few years after that, until I finally mustered the gumption to switch to O2.

Maybe I'll go with O2 then. At least that way when I'm on my deathbed in 2235 AD I won't regret only ever having tried Vodafone and Orange.

Picking up on Abi's point about alternatives to iPhone - if it is features rather than the brand/make then it may be worth a chat with Robo who has just purchased a google phone and is in love with it.
