Probably can't quote it exactly, but....

The saddest words of tongue or pen,-- it might have been.

After over a year I still will shed a tear over the thought of Jack's death.

Annie P. you done us in--real good.

Thanks, Wayne. Glad you liked it. It's old now, and still true, and being inside Ennis's head right then, knowing what he doesn't yet know, is a hard place to be.

We can only hope they meet up in November - and that Ennis is able to talk to Jack.

Thanks.

I think many of us do think that Ennis was on the urge of "change" after their fight... November holds so many different possiblities, could be Ennis finally loosen the short leash, could be Jack painfully quit Ennis... if Jack hadn't died before all that could happen.

So hearing these thoughts from Ennis, knowing that he's ready to give Jack what they both deserved, it's just devastating.

Yeah, it actually got to me that way when it came into my head. Knocked me down to write it, but somehow the irony got me, and I just had to put it down. I'm not sure if I should thank you or apologize for devastating you, but I appreciate sharing that feeling.

I was completely engrossed in Ennis' interior monologue... so devastatingly realistic and moving at the same time. I sincerely admire your honest portrayal of Annie Proulx' characters and the elegance of your prose.
Thank you so much for sharing,
Paola

Again I thank you rickp43 March 23 2008, 23:20:13 UTC
You have no idea how encouraging your comments are. The elegance of my prose? Wow. I could only hope for such a review. As far as "honest portrayal of Annie Proulx's charaters", well, I felt that was my responsibility as a writer. Thank you for saying that, for you, I was successful.

Oh absolutely, Rick :)
You show great respect for Annie's original characters that I can feel almost a continuum between them and yours.
Thank you so much, I hope you will continue writing,
Paola

Ahhh. Bittersweet. In my world, Jack got that note and they went after that sweet life.

But whatever happened, Ennis put it our there how he felt on Jack.

Thanks again rickp43 September 19 2008, 03:13:26 UTC
Thanks again, bud. This was written way before Santa Fe, probably Feb. 06 or so. Just imagined if he'd ever let those thoughts into his head.
