The basic answer is usually to give up and buy a new computer, or you could buy more memory (available from any computer shop, ask the assistant), and this should make your computer run faster, you may also need to buy a new graphics card as well. Or, alternatively, just mob one of the assistants in afore mentioned computer store for help, (that’s what i usually do when in need of help).

I always hope this is the case, but then, I'm not using anything as intelligent as a Mac. What are the chances I can just swap in my old HD into a new or used system and just keep moving from there?
Ditch XP and get your hands on an Ubuntu disk. Leveling up windows XP is not worth it (think of how many monsters you'll have to kill!!!). The problem is most likely a lack of physical memory. Do you know how much you have? I am totally in computer upgrade mode over here.
I've got 3 128MB RAM chips. For more info, I'd have to have the system in front of me. The problem is I want to keep the data and files that are on my old HD, since I have a lot of old projects and e-mail on there.
And the initial point of me upgrading to XP was that I have software that requires it; I guess I just didn't think it would cause this much of a problem ...
