why you shouldn't support this movie financially

ssj10 made a very good post on the inherent racism of the Avatar: The Last Airbender flick. thisficklemob made a comment on the post about the kids acting in this movie, and how its pretty much teaching them that PoC are lesser than white people, and that they should be greatful for white people allowing them to be in the movie, etc.

movies, ranting, racebending

I'm probably going to end up bootleggin' it. I refuse to hand money over to those fuckers, but I still want to see how it went, seeing as most reviewers of the movie now are pretty much deadpanning the entire thing (it's like 7% on Rotten Tomatoes right now).

I honestly didn't want to see the movie- I watch the trailers, and it appears to me that they totally screwed up the story, and changed the characters. That alone was enough to make me never want to see it.

As for the whole skin thing, I'm not sure what to think. I'm technically part of the "majority." But living in a place where white is not necessarily the color of choice, I don't like when people paint all white folks as being racist.

Either way, it gives one a lot to think about.

I don't either, but I don't think thats necessarily the objection here. Most PoC right now are just ticked that a clearly ethnic movie is being portrayed by non-ethnic characters, except for in the roles of Bad Guy Who Needs To Be Lead To The Good Way, and prop characters for the background. It's incredibly insulting and racist. I do believe that it is white "majority power" being exercised in a horrific, but I don't believe that makes all white people racist. Although.. I do think there are some people who ARE taking it that way, and thats not helping the situation at all.

It's definitely going to be something I'm keeping in my thoughts for the next while.

I saw an article on IMDB, I think, pointing out how a good number of people weren't happy with the casting decisions made. Honestly, I would like to see a little more diversity, but I'm hoping the talent makes it less of an issue. Granted, with everything today being based on "Who looks like they'll bring in the most money?" I'm honestly not surprised (though I am a saddened by the fact) about the fact that all the principals are of the Caucasoid persuasion.

I think one of the reasonings someone involved with the production team made was that the actors they picked would bring in more money, because they believed they were more popular. Quite frankly.. I don't think I've heard of any of them, or see any of them as "headliners". As one person made a comment along the lines of why didn't they just replace no-name white actors with no-name ethnic actors? Another posted that the casting call had been for caucasian actors with ethnicities considered.

I think with some characters.. they didn't even try to try and match them to look similar. I've seen some side-by-sides and its just goddamned ridiculoud in some cases.
