i agreed with this for a while, until i talked with someone who, like many, power and heat their house with gas. this is why gas prices go down in the winter-to give everyone some kind of balance when they're driving AND heating their house.
hmm. I don't really know much about sources of heat because I don't pay for mine. Why is gas heat a better option than the alternatives? Why should these people be given special consideration? Unless I'm extremely ignorant about this (which is definitely a possibility), I don't think it makes much sense not to support one of the only measures we can take to reduce our dependency and pollution rates because some people use it more (for more purposes) than others.
it just seems to be a very priviledged opinion of mine and yours, to say "why should these people be given special consideration?", when it's a matter of having a 40 degree cold house for 4 months. i agree that there has to be a way, another way, but usually the most poor can't afford to consider the other way. this is why i'm driving a veggie oil car, because i have the luxury of realizing an alternative.
It is, you're right. But this is America, where most of the country is based on the idea that money should help alleviate suffering. The poor are the ones who will suffer the most when our supply of oil diminishes (by whatever means), and if we don't start looking for alternatives now, they're going to get ripped off even more when that time comes. Obviously, if it was at all enforceable, a progressive tax on gas would be ideal. But what can we do? The poor will never be able to afford to consider another way but one day we will need that other way to be viable. We need to put pressure on politicians to create change now, and demanding accountability in response to a painful tax-hike is the only logical way I can think of to make that happen.

although mine would probably be a large kick to the collective nards of oil execs. just for giggles.

I'd be really interested to see how people here (in Nebraska) would deal with that, though.
Too bad it will never happen.

Of course, you have plenty of logic and reason behind your claim, so I can't fault you for that.
And to be honest, if you did that, Americans might just be stupid enough to keep on driving regardless.
