okay, I didn't get around to answering this. We get a minimum 2 oz sample of unprepared fiber. All the owner should do is shake and pick the sample before submitting. I prepare some of the sample and spin it as part of the judging. I take a total of 30-45 minutes on each sample now. Preparing and spinning an entire ounce of alpaca could take an hour minimum, probably much longer. If we had enough volunteers to get all the samples done this would not ever be an issue, but even paying the spinners it has been difficult to keep volunteers for more than a year once they realize the amount of time required. The two of us who judged this year are actively recruiting now for next year and that should help a great deal. (I hope) Thank you for your input.

OK, we *just* got into Cashmere goats, and we aren't going to show them/the fiber, but. 1 oz is a LOT of fiber - especially in the finer grades. (I know alpacas give pounds of fleece -but 1 oz of fine fiber is STILL a lot!). On our goats, that's almost 1/4 of the annual shed ( ... )
