Nice timing...

Fun stuff last night--a sump pump failure during a flood watch and a snowstorm. The battery backup couldn't keep up, so the basement got a wee tish damp, like ankle deep, before I could bypass the float switch and get the pump running on manual. I was (am) still sick. Sniff-sniff, cough-cough. And I had my water-soaked Wellies on. Fat lot of good those did...

So we now have a brand-new cast-iron 3/4 hp sump pump with battery backup. plus an extra 1/2 hp cast-iron spare on the shelf with a brand-new switch. Hopefully safe! [Knock on wood]

This may be overkill, but you might also want to invest in a backup power source as well. Remember the flooding back a year or so? Some buds down in Char-tucky lost power and consequently their sump pump let a foot of water into their finished basement

forgot to edit - I meant a bigger backup power source - something that'd go for 24-48 hrs
