Whenever we went traveling when I was a kid, we slept in tents at campgrounds, and when I saw houses nearby, I would wonder what it was like for those people to live so close to a campground. Later I realized it wasn't like anything to live close to a campground when I realized I live less than a mile from one. Duh

Pretty photos! And oh, I'm jealous. How'd you get your au pair job? I want to be an au pair, but various commitments (such as school and needing to make REAL money for school and needing to take summer courses) keep me from doing it both during the school year and the summer. But I was thinking of doing it after I get out of college, as something to pass a year or two. If you could share your experience thus far with me, that'd be awesome. :)

Well, when I finished school last year, I had no idea that I'd be doing this. But after some months of having no luck finding a job that I didn't really want anyway, I decided to try this. There's a bunch of websites out there, but I used www.greataupair.com, which I thought was very thorough and safe. Au pairs and families all make their own profiles and then you can search for each other based on interests or location or whatever. And actually, I did hardly any of my own searching because as soon as I made my profile I was hearing from families. I emailed back and forth a lot with the family that I'll be working with until we finally decided we liked each other enough to make it official. And all without paying for an agency or buying a membership on the site.

Obviously I haven't started yet, but I'm really excited about it. You should definitely check it out, though yeah, you might want to wait until after you're out of school.
