The Doctor was anything but bored. He was becoming really irritated with the whole time-travel bit that was involved in time traveling, and especially the bit where he occasionally ran into himself. In this case, he ran into a rather recent version of himself, who handed him two devices and said "Say hello to River for me!" before zipping off.

Way to spoil himself. Really, now.

And then, of course, whatever these fantastic devices were, they appeared to be something that Torchwood really, really wanted to get a hold of. With Jack missing at the time (from the year, he figured he was probably traveling with the Doctor at the moment---again, time travel!), everyone appeared to think that the Doctor was some sort of troublemaker and wanted to kill him.

So here he was, with two strange devices taking up his hands, running like a madman through the streets of Cardiff. Where the hell did he park the TARDIS? Which way was it out of this place? And---wait, was that---?

"RIVER!"

"RIVER!"Her eyes widened and she turned towards the voice. That wonderful, sometimes frustrating voice. It was something she could never get out of her head. More often than not, she would turn to find she was still alone. Not this time, though. Her lips turned upward as she grinned at the man running towards her. She noted that this was a very different Doctor, not the one who loved bowties and called her a hippie. She had to admit, she found that a little fascinating. At least this one didn’t look like he was twelve, she thought to herself ( ... )

The Doctor all but fell on top of River as she pulled him into the alleyway. Okay, right, that was a much better idea than just running aimlessly around the city until he happened upon his missing time machine.

She knew who he was again. There wasn't going to be a time where she didn't know him, was there? He noted, idly, that her hair was different than the last time he saw her. Where was she in his timeline? Where was he in hers? He sort of wished he kept that notebook he had in his first incarnation, it would be easier to keep track of these things.

"Yes, well, I'll let you know once I know why I was invited into this one." He looked down at the little globs of technology in his hands. They were spindly at the ends, with loops that could've easily gone around his fingers like five rings, with a glowing orange ball on one of the bits, and a glowing blue ball on the other. Possibly they sat on the palm? But then, what did they do?

"We need to get out of here," he said. "That was the first wave of them."

River sat there, listening to him ramble with a coy smirk. He was so cute when he was trying to explain himself. His eyes were different than the younger Doctor. She wasn’t sure where this one was in terms of timeline, but she liked what she was seeing. Reaching up, she gently patted his cheek. “You’re invited because you’re the Doctor. Is there really any other reason.”

A part of her noticed just how close they really were in the alley, but she didn’t act on it. This wasn’t her Doctor. She too wondered where they were in the timelines. Should she pull out her diary and compare, she wondered if he even had met her before. He must have, he was screaming my name, she thought to herself. She only really knew who he was because so few men run at her while screaming her name. She had never met this incarnation ( ... )
