[sickbay - invasion of the bbs: open]

Jan 31, 2010 21:25

Most of the kids had agreed to come to sickbay with her with very little fuss, and Tina led them down corridors, into a turbolift, back out again, and then through the doors of sickbay at a brisk trot, all of them linking hands and being reminded every thirty seconds or so to "stay together, guys, okay ( Read more... )

Tina laughed as well. "So you do, clever girl."

"Now what am I going to do with you?" she asked, though she certainly wasn't expecting an answer from Pasha. "Obviously I can't leave you unattended in here."

She stood up, hoisting Pasha with her and sitting her down on the biobed. She kept one hand on the girl as she looked around to see what everyone was doing. Sickbay was still a little hectic, but kids were starting to leave with their parents or temporary guardians, and it looked like her counterpart had things under control.

Tina looked back to Pasha. "Want to stay with me for a while, Pasha?"

Pasha kicked her legs out from the edge of the bed once again, like a diminutive clockwork toy she was never completely at rest, always in motion. She tilted her head to the side, deciphering the soft sounding words of standard. Stay with Tina? Tina was fun. Pasha liked fun.

She nodded enthusiastically.

"Okay." Tina smiled reassuringly. She'd be worried about how quick to trust a stranger Pasha was, except that if she was a more suspicious child there'd be no way to deal with her just at the moment.

She lifted Pasha down from the bed and took her hand, leading her to one of the terminals at a desk against the wall, out of the way. She sat down and pulled the unresisting child onto her lap.

"I know you're probably to old for sitting on laps," she said, "but I don't know how else to keep any eye on you while I do this."

As quickly as she could, Tina typed out and sent some messages. Then she looked down at the little girl.

"Do you like to play computer games?"

Pasha nodded. She was first in her pre-school for skills using a terminal. There was the additional encouragement that cousin Thomas let her play on ‘Zombies of Doom XII’ whenever they played together.

She shifted on Tina’s lap, grumping slightly, six was far too old to be sitting on people’s laps. She was a big girl now, she only slept with her blankie when she had bad dreams. Even then she didn’t like to sleep with it in case the bigger children in her class found out somehow.

Tina hunted around on the network for a while until she found someone's folder of games. She selected a few options and then lifted Pasha enough to slip out from under her before setting her back down on the chair.

"Your choice," Tina said. She dared to turn her back on the girl for exactly long enough to grab another chair for herself, and then sat down next to her. She'd keep an eye on her while she played, and wait for any answers to her messages that might be forthcoming.

3D Chess.

It wasn’t exactly the conventional choice for a six year old over painting games or ‘virtual pet’ games, however Pasha was far from a conventional six year old. For the first time since being changed into a child her attention was rapt on the screen and her focus completely on defeating the computer. The girl lightly bit on her lower lip as she concentrated.

Tina took note of what had captured Pasha's attention so thoroughly. She had a feeling she'd be watching a lot of chess games in the near future.

She looked around the room, which was steadily clearing, leaving behind only those adult patients who were in sickbay for long-term healing. It seemed pretty quiet. She could probably put someone in charge with instructions to comm her if anything came up, and get Pasha out of easy reach of medical implements.

Tina remembered Christopher saying that he wanted to get lunch after being discharged. Maybe she'd see if Pasha was hungry as soon as she'd trounced her computerized opponent.

The young Russian glared poisonously at the monitor. The computer interface was set to a much more difficult level compared to the children’s versions that she usually breezed through with practiced ease, but this game was a challenge.

Sacrificing a knight on the second level she smirked as the computer automatically moved to defend it’s left side leaving it’s top level king ripe for pickings by her bishop. Game over. Pasha turned to Tina and smiled, proud of her achievement.

"Wow, great job!" Tina said. She held her hand out for a high-five, wondering if Pasha would know what she was doing.

"Are you hungry? Want some lunch?"

Grinning widely Pasha high-fived Tina. This was a gesture she was aquatinted with, the boys in her class sometimes did it to congratulate each other. The girls never did though.

"Lunch? Obed? Da, please." She hadn't realised that she was hungry until now, the excitement of appearing in somewhere new overruling her attention.

[Translation: Obed? = Lunchtime?]

"Let's get you fed, then," Tina said. She stood up and offered the girl her hand. Once Pasha had taken it, Tina got a firm grip and led her out of sickbay and to one of the recreation rooms for a bite to eat.
