Tub Thumping Job Hunting

Aug 06, 2008 15:21

I've been searching for jobs lately, and it's occurred to me,  I suck a job hunting.  Where is this magic place people are looking to find jobs.  I've tried the usual places (monster.com, washingtonpost.com) and find them to be mostly useless.  Am I doing this wrong?  I'm a pretty smart guy, it shouldn't be this difficult.    All suggestions

I'm sad to say that most of my jobs, good or bad (but mostly good) I've gotten through some sort of connection. All but the one I just left, really. And that one I got through a placement agency that I found on washingtonpost.com. :-/ Good luck.

Yeah, it feels like it's a lot of who you know, and i don't really know anyone who's where I want to be.

For me, I posted my resume to monster.com and another one.. careerbuilder.com I think? And then the calls started coming in. Federaljobsearch.com is another good one. But yeah, I have to agree with darthami. Who you know matters a lot more then what you know.

What sort of job are you looking for?

Most of what I get from monster.com is spam. I don't want to sell insurance, and nothing on my resume indicates otherwise.

I'm looking for marketing and communication positions, but I'm flexible within those fields.

I think you should look at jobs in California. :)

I'd love too, unfortunately, no one from CA will interview me unless I move there. :-P

It's really all about connections.
That said, I lucked into my last job via a 6 month old resume on Monster, CIO called me and said "hey, you interested in interviewing?"

Current position I found at small company who doesn't post on any of the job sites, but lists openings on their own website. Consider focusing on what companies you want to work at, or geographically where you want to work and check their sites for listings.

Connections...
Try linkedin.com, your facebook friends, etc. Put out feelers, you never know who your friends might know. "Hey, I'm trying to find a new job in marketing departments, know anyone who has a job and might need me? Know anyone who works somewhere cool?"

I thought about linked in, the problem is my current boss is linked to me there. oops.

Most of my local friends know I'm looking.

Say, you know anyone hiring in the DC metro area? :-)

I look at dice.com, craigslist, and my very personal favorite, www.stcwdc.org. That's the site for the Society of Technical Communication. They have tons of jobs listed on there.

I'll have to check out dice.com, I've never heard of it.
