Got Nothin' But Love.

I had a lot to say about the XMFC fandom and why I won't be participating in it, like I originally thought I would be, but it really boils down to this: I am too tired and too goddamn old to deal with stupidity and wank and earnest discussions about things that should really be obvious to people with common sense. Thanks to my new job, I have a ( Read more... )

I really didn't like the movie at all (surprising given that I am such a huge fan of the X-Men universe in general), but I did like the exploration of Erik's origins a lot. I started writing an Erik/Moira fic (because they were by FAR the best potential pairing that came out of the movie for me - so much angst!) and I made the mistake of popping around the fandom to take a look. Yeah, pretty much killed the very little desire I had to even marginally participate in the fandom. I don't know if it's for the same reasons as you, but yeah.

I keep trying to tell myself that I am not surprised at the way fandom hates women immediately in every new show/movie/game/book, but I am. Seeing it echo out into the larger world is what just compounds the deep irritation. If there's one place that should be safe for women, frankly, it's fandom. Instead, I see posts all the time about this girl is gross, how they don't want to see fic with this character because she's short and ugly, fat and dumb, skinny and obnoxious, how she gets in the way ( ... )

The wank had nothing to do with misogyny, but shit, it might as well be because it would've gotten around to that anyway. The sheer amount of vitriol aimed at Emma Frost is completely unwarranted, and while I'm not a fan of January Jones, I thought she did a good job with her character. I hate how anti-women sentiment is present in every single fandom without exception, and how it's the same fucking tired bullshit every time. If I hear one more comment about how icky girlparts are interfering with someone's slash ship, I'm going to lose it all over the place because OH MY GOD, YOU ARE A WOMAN, STOP HATING ON YOUR FUCKING GENDER.

If you ever do write that Erik/Moira, I'd love to read it. I really liked their tense, distrustful dynamic and I wish more fic explored that.

Rose Byrne is fantastic. I need to watch more things with her in it, starting with Bridesmaids, which I did not know she was in! And I need an icon of her because, man, she is really pretty. (I am shallow.)

Which is what I usually do, but I made the mistake of giving fandom a chance this time. Sigh.

Blerg. Wank! I just don't get it. LET'S ALL FIGHT ABOUT STUFF THAT WE ALL ENJOY AND/OR BE MEAN TO OTHER PEOPLE. Who has the time/energy/interest to do that? Isn't life hard enough?

Fandom, for me, is a place to squee, read lovely stories, and interact with smart, funny people. That's why I stay close to my tiny, AMAZING flist.

And did you say hot chocolate? (runs off to find some...)

God, seriously. Like, sometimes there are important discussions to be had, and we should have them, and I am happy to participate in those, but stuff like this is just idiotic and prevalent, and I'm tired of having it in my life. I keep getting into new fandoms and leaving them so quickly because the comms are just full of aggravating things. Ugh.

Hot chocolate and fruit tarts! Now that is the way to spend the evening.

...there are important discussions to be had, and we should have them... Yes! I agree! What's great about fandom is that it's still pretty anonymous. That makes it a wonderful place to have discussions that can go far below the surface. And since it's a written form, I think it makes us reflect in a way that chatting with a friend at Starbucks does not always. (Now, I am not saying/implying that chatting with friends at Starbucks can't be deep or stretch us in important ways. It's just that this exchange is different.)

Fruit tarts? YUM! I had strawberry shortcake and it was AMAZING.

Ooh, thanks for linking to that open letter post, I'll be reading that right this minute. And I'm putting the First Class fic on my to-read list for after I've seen the film. Yay!

I love that open letter post. It's everything I needed to read after dealing with the real world and coming home to find fandom saying and doing stupid shit again.
