That's the way it seems these days... To be a nice guy, to be honest with people, and trust them thinking you can back... I've been called most things from naive to ignorant, all the way to Mr. Oblivious. All in all, I've always tried to take it in stride.

Eric hun, if there's one thing I've learned in the past year, its that allowing yourself to get dicked over all the time by constantly putting everyone else's wants, needs, and feelings above your own, will never get you anywhere and will NEVER really make you happy, no matter how good a person you think you are for doing it ( ... )

My opinion: You should be honest and truthful. Here's a question for you: do you think you're a good guy?

If the answer is yes, don't worry about it.

I agree wholeheartedly with Eri-chan. When it comes to business and work, nice guys finish last. You can be nice and buddy, buddy with your work-mates, all you want, but when they start fucking up and somebody tries to lay the blame on you, you have to set the record straight even if it means being a hardass or asshole. To quote one of those guys on Serenity, "When somebody tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back."

You can continue to escort little old ladies across the street and volunteer at the local pet-shelter or whatever floats your boat outside of work, but keep in mind this little tid-bit of common sense adivce while you're making and managing your money. Nice guys finish last. Anything Hollywood says to the contrary is a load of bullshit.
