the petrelli's and their powers

a lot of people seem to be confused about sylar's ability, and the relationship that i might have with peter's ability. i am finding a lot of interest in this and trying to come up with an explanation has not been that easy, but here is my view on the subject ( Read more... )

also, sylar's ability to copy the powers of others is not the same as peter's or arthur's. peter doesn't have to know or even talk to the person who has a power in order to absorb it, it just happens, so you can say that he uses mimicry in order to copy those powers. sylar on the other hand, uses the empath method more than peter because he actually has to make a connection with the other person in order to get their abilities and because he had his intuitive aptitude fully developed, he is able to understand and see everything that much clearer. this is why he had no trouble tapping into ever single power he absorbed and why they came so natural to him. but peter had to seek help in order to control all those abilities fearing that he would somehow loose control, which he did at the end of season one.Interesting theories! I think a lot of it has to do with how naturally empathetic each of the characters is. Take Peter -- he's totally compassionate and kind (became a nurse), and is always in tune with how people think and feel. ( ... )

As for Arthur...I think he's kind of a happy medium? He's not as pure as Peter, but he (probably) never went violent like Sylar to attain power. Because he had love, maybe?

Angela said Arthur was once a great man so I think you could be right way back when it was never as pure as Peter but not as violent as Sylar till later in his life. Unless Arthur was baddie from the start.

that's actually a very solid point. peter is a very empathetic character by nature, therefore he doesn't need to connect emotionally because its so much a part of his own personality. sylar, who grew up in a cold environment is not really in touch with his own emotions and has always been afraid to show them and to connect with another human being for fear of rejection because of his own relationship with his mother. to him, intuitive aptitude came so much easily because to him it was easier to understand how things and people worked than to connect with them in some emotional level. when he forgave elle, he made that connection with her allowing him to tap into his empathic mimicry and absorbing her power. he fixed her, took her pain away. i think sylar has a lot of depths with his ability and goes to so much more, angela petrelli says it herself "you have no idea what you are capable of". i wouldn't be surprised if sylar ends up being the catalyst and not claire, but we have to wait and see
