Permit Me: adventures with water heaters

Feb 04, 2009 08:20

Replacing a water heater - not rocket science, especially when it has a 5 year warranty and it was purchased 3 years ago, installed by a licensed contractor, permitted, bla bla bla. And yet...
And then it went pear-shaped... )

And now you know why I replaced my water heater quietly, alone, and in the dead of night. There is no way I could bring my house up to code, and I didn't feel like living without hot water forever or spending eternity wrangling with recalcitrant and unhelpful inspectors.

I'm glad you're up and running, and have no further need to deal with the crazed denizens of city government. Except me. You're stuck with me.

I'm in your camp on accomplishing these things in the wee hours when City Hall is dark and uninhabited. Not quite sure what Himself's thinking is. My suspicions are that it's either his 2 engineering (civil & mechanical) degrees kicking and wanting things TO SPEC, or a superstitious bid to stave off the kind of bad luck that saw him repairing a sinkhole under his driveway less than 2 months after he bought it, and a couple of other similar items.

The funny thing, is BND's feeling like he's got the better end of this setup, b/c I'm "dealing with it." Meanwhile, I feel like *I* have the best of both worlds. Entertainment without the bottom-line responsibility.

Soothing, to think I'll always have a crazed denizen of city government on hand. Bwahahahahaha! And we shall rule the world!

What an extroverted little water heater you have!

*snicker* at the overdressed boss. Glad the inspector who actually did things saw the humor in it.

I must say hearing this I'm so glad I don't own a home any more. Though when I did I'm not sure there even WAS a permit process in the area given how rural it was. Or if there was, no one told me about it. Least of all the carpenters. OTOH, their business dated back several generations so I don't think people asked them many pesky questions about permits.*wry grin*

The guy who came out twice and ended up signing the permit was really quite nice. He explained what he was citing and how it could be brought up to code, without being condescending. He also explained what he *wasn't* citing, because there was no safety hazard/very little variance from reqs/*exact* compliance would be huge expensive alteration of the hallway/closet.

My own feelings about home ownership are pretty mixed now, with the economy and changed/ing FruitStand configuration as prime factors. It will be an interesting year, for sure.
