SPN Ep Rxn 6.6: Truth Serum. Just Do It.

Oct 31, 2010 20:55

OMG, this was a weird episode. If a normal ep is a sandwich with the case as the bread and the character development as the meat and cheese, this ep was a low-carb lettuce wrap made from an entire package of sliced turkey. Character development is ALL IT'S HERE FOR.
Has something like this ever been done on TV before? Serial novels? Comic books ( Read more... )

Honestly, though, I don't think Lisa was condescending and judgmental. Dean has a lot of problems, and Lisa's first priority has to be her son. I don't blame her for freaking out about Dean's unexplained weirdo behavior in 6.05. She brought up some very harsh truths in this episode, and I don't blame her for it. I think she is exactly the sort of stable and mature person that Dean needs in his life, which is why I think she and Ben will be back.

I love Dean, but I think fandom sometimes cuts him too much slack. He really would not be the best person to be in a relationship with. I give Lisa a ton of credit for supporting him through that missed year.

I personally thought they were not the truth per se, but her opinion on what she considers the truth. After all, Dean thinks he is a killer and is good for nothing me which is what he considers the truth. I just don't see how Lisa bringing up the deal he made years ago that he is still paying for was relevant to what happened with Ben. And yes, i applaud her for putting Ben as her first priority. But i feel like if Ben has truly been the best mother she could have been, she wouldn't have let Dean into her life that year to begin with. But that is another story. I don't think its in her place to profess to want to help Dean who came to her in a damaged packet. Acted like she accepts him for who he is and everything and then turn around and say, dude i don't like most of your past even though i don't understand it. She criticizes his relationship with his brother which isn't obviously perfect, but it means a lot to him. And then she makes a bold statement such as he's the reason you can never be happy. I don't know how those are the ( ... )

Mostly your review made me laugh, clap a little, and say, “yep! That’s right!”

The analogy of the show as a sandwich, but this being a low-carb lettuce wrap got me! Funny, and smart…the way I like my show.

It's happy-rabid-puppy-robo-Sam LOL!!!!!!

And Dean just lost the family that doesn't lie and scheme behind his back.

And who are normal. He is so alone in this world, and my heart breaks for him.

The Bitch Face is no more. Now we have the Lucifer Face. It's a mix of mercenary concern, aped sympathy, condescension, scorn, and just the right amount of "how could you do this to me? Your very purpose on this planet is to believe all my bullshit and cater to my whims!"Jared isn't using the old faces he used to give to Sammy; some of those old mannerisms were also seen in Dean Forrester. They are all gone! His acting with this new character is outstanding ( ... )

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Bobby in Two Minutes To Midnight. But that totally goes on the list.

Ironically, this pictorial meta:
http://zimshan.livejournal.com/225640.html
has a completely different take on what Sam's performance in the Croatoan factory meant: Sam demonstrated his commitment to saving as many people as possible. Bobby saw something that made him sad, maybe something that reminded him of other people he'd known who'd had the humanity burned out of them by hunting or maybe by armed service.

Glad you liked the review!

I LOVE YOU! No, really, I love that you took the time and effort to put this together, because it is awesome. I have a lot I want to say, but I've got a Pathology exam in about six hours and need to make some headway with my revision. I'll be sure to comment later, because this is epic and I adore it. :D

YAY PATHOLOGY!!!
I wonder how many of us are in medical fields. We must be geniuses if we have time for fandom AND school.

Great post! Lots of stuff to chew over.

I think the season is going well but my Sam friends hate it.

Tell them to think of it as an experiment. What happens to Sam if we cut out this piece? Or how about this one?

I love this review. Insightful and funny synopsis!

New Sam has a very straight face, even if his professional smile now looks a bit like he wants to eat her, with fava beans.Best description of Sam during that scene I've read. He was such a creeper, but this line made me grin :D And you pointed out how he was also like a puppy waiting for a pat on the head from Dean for his good work. Still some of the old Sam there, I swear ( ... )

I agree so much with just about everything you say here.

But I do have to admit, unlike you, I did used to think Sam was heartless. Not immoral, just compensating for some subtle Azazel-induced lack of human empathy by reading a lot of pop-psych books and trying to be nice, when he remembered. When Sam went off the deep end in Lucifer Rising because Dean *hurt his feelings* on the fake voicemail, that should have been a big tipoff to me, but oh, well.

But now that Sam actually is heartless? Big difference. Apparently he runs a lot more on emotion than I'd ever guessed.
