Why do I even waste my time trying to socialize?

I have come up with the hypothesis that cats don't actually 'meow'. I have noticed that our cats, when making noise, have their mouths open for longer than the 'meow' sound can be heard. My theory is that they actually make a longer sound, but the 'meow' is the only part within human range of hearing.

Some...thing keeps hitting the ceiling in the office here. I've already bugged Carolyn twice to make sure it's not her, and nothing has fallen over upstairs....but something is constantly bumping the ceiling somewhere above me.
