I can usually look at my life, count my blessings, and know I'm doing the best I can and have made a lot of good decisions that have gotten me to a pretty good place. This time of year always gets me thinking about the past for a lot of reasons. Today I find myself reflecting on one of the saddest side effects of breaking up with a long-term partner, which is losing contact with their family too. Dear LJ, I am not dead and, apparently, neither is my journal.

It turns out that spring here doesn't smell like half-decayed leaves and rich black dirt. It smells like rolling surf and sand and seaweed. The snowdrops have been blossoming for a week, and what I'm pretty sure are daffodils are halfway up by the side door. From my seat at the back of my yard, in a sunbeam that's tempting me to take my jacket off, I can see or hear: three mourning doves, two cardinals, five or six chickadees, what I think is a robin, something unidentified that's just kind of chirping, and a crow.
