Sounds like you need to download some new drivers for the monitor. Look on the monitor box for what the native resolution settings are, and then dry to find some updated drivers for your laptop. I had the same problem when I picked up a 19inch widescreen for work. Took forever to find the drivers that would work with it.
When I told my comp to find new drivers my computer insisted it had the most current available for both the monitor and the driver. I know the computer can't necesarily be trusted, but I'm not sure how to look for a new driver when it insists this is as good as it gets. A draftsman helped me and he said some of their older video cards had to be swapped out when they upgraded to wide screens for this same reason. He said certain video cards can't handle it. Of course my video card is integrated along with everything else in my old comp so nothing can be upgraded.
I'm sure someone worked out some sort of driver to work around the problem, but I'm not computer savvy enough to track it down, nor do I have the time with this credit load and the continuing fights with Geico (thank God the IRS admitted defeat and went away).
Maybe I can work on it this winter break. Thanks for the advice.
