I'm torn between #2 and 4.

I think you shouldn't just outright quit your job, because you're not that great at budgeting.

However, if they'll let you go part-time, that might be the best option. That is, if you're really going to devote the extra time to building your portfolio.

However, if you want to go to grad school just to get away from your awful job, I think that's probably a bad idea. You have a year's work experience and you're good at whatever it is that you do. You could definitely find a better job. Even if you made slightly less money, it would be worth it if you enjoyed the job more.

Well, I know that I will work really hard on it. I get bored really easily and I need to be productive. I don't want to go to grad school because I want to escape my job, I want to go to grad school so that I don't have to work at jobs like this for the rest of my life. I can lead the life of a globe-trotting artist instead, or something. I have no doubt I could get a job for even more money if I wanted. I'm in the process of interviewing for one right now, but that's not the point. The point is I need to do some long-term planning. Do I want a career in whatever it is I'm doing now or do I want to be a professional artist? That's the question.

Can one be a professional artist? And does one need grad school for that? (these are not sarcastic questions...I'm honestly curious). I sort of thought you meant grad school to teach, or something.

Of course one can be a professional artist. I mean, you're self-employed, but you are a professional.

And yes, you pretty much need to go to grad school to be taken seriously. Not only that, but you pretty much have to go to one of the top ten grad schools for art to be taken seriously. It's a cut-throat world.

like jordan says, it's all about whether you'll REALLY devote your summer to building up your portfolio. if you aren't that disciplined, find a job you like better and then quit, and you can calmly work on getting to grad school in 2010.

I'm disciplined! I finished that huge thesis show, didn't I? The thing is I can't work calmly on this. My job right now is really easy and undemanding, and I still haven't had time to work on my paintings. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that I will be able to support myself freelancing while I work on this. And I think I will be a lot happier too.
