I think I'm more impressed by the state of mind you seem to be in than the epiphany you're writing about. But that's another discussion entirely, I suppose.
Perhaps the reason "love" is so bastardized is because rather than associate the word with the ideal of love the majority of us are told of in our youths, people associate their own experiences with the word. "Love" becomes what we make of it.
And yet, the vast majority of people never realize this. Most assume that their current experiences and perceptions are this ineffable, eternal, magic principle. And so it stands, a generation of individuals, most unable to enjoy feelings for what they are, preferring to repeatedly assume they are part of a glorified ideal, repeatedly being crushed when their "eternal" fire flickers out.
And for some reason, most never learn. Pathetic, really.
