Well I guess the above answers one question :)

I know of someone over here that is looking for corsets at the moment and I wanted to direct her to you, are you taking orders?

I'm really not one to ask but I'll tell you this. I went straight from school into the work force and gave up on what i wanted to do in favor of what I should do. I've been pretty unhappy for the past 8 years, like really unhappy. Sometimes it's better to do the hard yards to make your dreams reality from the get go, and realistically the younger you are the easier that is. You'll still have your families support and somewhere safe to stay. Not saying I don't, I'm moving back in with my mother next year while I go and study fine arts (finally), but it's a lot easier before you've already gotten yourself established in the workforce.

Best of luck whatever you do hon.

Yes, I'm taking orders at the moment. Give her my lj or etsy. :) [[Thank you!]]

Mmm, that's the one thing I'm worried about - I don't want to be taken away from what I enjoy doing - i.e I don't want to end up as a machinist for a costume company or the like. Design and film costumes, please!

My family has been great thus far, I just hope I can get everything sorted before this year ends, it's a bit daunting the idea of having all that time stretched out in front of me and no idea what I'm doing...

Gah. >.< I hope the arts degree is good fun. Some of my friends are doing BFA's and having the time of their lives (Whitecliffe, I believe). I contemplated doing that towards the end of school, but I'm a bit too set in my ways when it comes to sketching and painting.

First, can I say you're not alone? I've been pondering two of these questions for the past two years, though I suppose pondering getting a job while working in retail isn't really pondering that course of action, is it?

The only suggestion I feel comfortable making would be to look around, see if any fabric stores in your area are looking for help, even part-time. That way you can work with a part of your passion, and help others in their creative pursuits, and have the rest of the time for yourself to devote to your business. That's sort of like your first option, now that I look back at your entry. (I've got to say, if I had the chance to work for a designer or get an apprenticeship? I'd jump for joy and apply as fast as I could get everything in order.)

Good luck, hon. I know it's difficult sometimes, but choose what makes you happy. It's better for you in the long run. ;) And I absolutely say yes to the 50's dresses. It's such a fun style and works for pretty much everyone, so it's kind of a win all around.

Haha, yes lots of people have been telling me that. It's unfortunate that I'm basically friends with all the science geeks from my year - all at uni, all working towards something. They don't get to play with silks though, that makes me feel better. :P

Sadly the only fabric stores in my entire city are spotlight and various little family run emporiums. I looked into spotlight awhile ago (employee discount? Yes please!) but my local doesn't let you work specifically in the "fabric" section, you just sort of...cycle around.

If I can't get anything sorted in the next two weeks I'm definitely knocking on that costume designers door, it'd be a great experience. Just want to give other options a chance (especially seeing as I suddenly had a decent bit of interest in my work over the last two days).

Oh, and I'll definitely be working on some prototype patterns for fifties dresses soon, once the weather her picks up. Coldest october in something like 65 years! We're supposed to be nearing summer! Mad.

A cold October means you could make adorable little shrugs to go with those dresses. Not to play devil's advocate or anything. ;)

And yes.. employee discounts are beautiful things, until you realize most of your paychecks are going back to the store. Then again, I wouldn't have half the things I've made for myself if I behaved all the time at work!

Well... What I would do is go back to school. Actually, I've been thinking of doing that when my studies end (unless I surprisingly get a job) because my current school is a lot more theory and design based than I'd like, we sew very little! I do love swing, but as I don't have much time after school I'm afraid my skills get rusty... BUT, the thing is. Going to school in Finland costs you little to none, I haven't ever paid for my schooling, with the exception of the materials and such... So if I were in you position that wouldn't be an option since you already know how things are done, and I guess it's not worth extending your loans ( ... )

You must have an awesome government. Ours is going to the dogs - privatised health care is be a fact in a few years O.o. I've been raised very debt phobic, which I suppose is a good thing on a practical level, but these courses really rob you - the hours make getting a job almost impossible so you need the living allowance loan on top of school fees >.<

And yes, I'm definitely thinking of asking for work experience should they not want to work on a designing level, plus I can legally work in the U.K for two years or something (colony member!).

I had a lovely dream last night along those lines, where I bajoodles of customers and a fancy fairygothmother stamp on my work! :P

Yeah, all from the tax payers wallets... I hate to be in debt, too, which is why I don't take student loan and try to live with what I get from the welfare office/or something.

I hope you'll get the job! :) It would be an awesome experience indeed, and very beneficial to your own business, definitely! So, thumbs up and let us know how it went!

Whoo, tax! I should move to Finland.

I'm working on my CV at the moment. It's a little tricky, building a CV when you're self taught...I shall get there though! By tonight, hopefully.

Thank you for the well wishes. I'm quite miffed about there not being any courses that I'd like because life would be muuuuuch simpler if I could take a course and get a qualification. Silly school fees and their not having scholarships.

I'm working on my cv at the moment, so fingers crossed for that!
