so a couple of weeks ago I went to a couple of free online credit report places to check on my credit history to make sure everything was good. Good ole banking industry insight... Getting your "free credit report" isn't what people think. Most people think that oh, a credit score, that's a number. You are entitled by law to get one free credit report a year, from annualcreditreport.com. That will list all your trade lines (credit cards, car loans, medical collections, etc). It doesn't give you a number, like 680. Just how you have been handling those accounts. You can then choose to pay to get what your actual score is. And really, the score it self is useless. Each credit company using a difference scoring system when they are going to calculate your credit (say a credit card company looks at a different number than a mortgage company, both are different than the score you get online).

Also, anytime any one pulls your credit when you are applying for something, you are allow to get a copy of the report they pulled, without a charge.

And yea, I know it sucks about companies not being upfront and honest about what they are charging for, and what they aren't. :-(
