I'm all for school - but if interior design wasn't for, Graphic Design may not be either. Of course they are different, but there are certain attitudes that affect both.
Go private/freelance, fight and stress and crazy taxes: tends to earn a bit more money right away.
Go work for a shop, earn shit, deal with politics, but can climb to top.
I see you at least a little-bit like myself - I doubt you will put up with too much garbage from people. Which means likely you will aim for a big corporate place for in-house work, or will go freelance. To that I'll say: I'm doing well enough, money and such, but there is no 'up' for me. I'll be switching paths in time - try some different Design, or add some business skills.
As for the program - with my experience and background at the time, they accepted my portfolio on the super-late run (in May I think). I'm sure they will accept you too, as you have more education then I did then. While there is lots of competition, they usually want a few 'adults' in every class.
I'm a bit down on formal education because I'm not a good student. Algonquin just wants money. It's a business. The best way to get hired is to know your stuff and have a track record of real experience. Always know what's currently fashionable.
