daze of karaoke

It's weird but I seem to be doing a lot of karaoke lately. Not in smoky, windowless rooms with the mic turned up to maximum reverb and ten English songs to choose from like in China, but at holiday parties and bars. I like to indulge my inner rock star. I have a loud voice. I don't even need a mic really. I'm working up to singing some Heart. Those ( Read more... )

Hey, how funny you should mention those Heart songs. I was just at a college band reunion in Madison where our old drummer lives, and our singer who flew out from Seattle was saying how now that she lives in their old home town has been getting back into Heart. We did Magic Man, though not terribly well because I was completely faking it on guitar. We also did a Pat Benatar song to complete our mid-80s nostalgia kick.

Heartbreaker? Hit Me With Your Best Shot? Or the classic black-spandex-sporting anthem Love Is A Battlefield...

We did Heartbreaker, which we also did back in the day when we were all at Berkeley. I actually always thought Neil whatever-his-name-was was a pretty kick-ass guitarist!

the inner glam rock star needs some attention, don't shy away from giving it to her ;)

I heard this awesome Chinese band where the lead singer (a chinese chick) was belting out the English tunes with no accent and in such a clear voice, it was fantastic!

and you've obviously never been to Party World, Beijing's premium karaoke spot, heh.

Did you see that singer at the "Give Live a Try" John Lennon tribute show? I've been reading a lot about that and looking at pictures. It looked like a great show. I want to see Cold Fairyland perform someday, the pippa/synth combination is very intriguing. I want to go to Party World!! I'll have to hone my skills here at Suki's Steak House where it's all fun and games until the 21-year-old bithday girl pukes in the corner (like she did the last time I went, yuck!).

I just realized that you couldn't have seen that singer at the John Lennon tribute show because it was in Shanghai, not Beijing. Doh! Anyway, what was the band called? Sounds like it was a good show. By the way, your new journal photo is gorgeous! I'm sorry you're so sick, please get better soon.

ewww... yeah, thank ye gods no 21 year old birthday bashes here (and even if there were, chinese girls rarely drink anything stronger than a coke, and even then, rarely to a stage of pukability)

well, whenever you manage to make it back here, we'll get a group together to hang out at party world ;) (my treat)

Well, how about "Creative Non-fiction"? ;)
It is actually an option at UBC. I think travel writing and essays fall into this category.
Have you ever considered sharing a few chapters of your Shanghai novel with your readers?

Yes I think that is a useful category, I wish PSU had more fluid choices. I have to choose between Creative, Non-Fiction or Technical. My romance novel has been abandoned as I work on my grad school application, so 1890's Shanghai will have to wait while I write about growing up with no TV in Alaska. I am working up the courage to post an essay here, thank you for the encouragement!
