[ ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS--

That namely being that among the sea of milling tennis players, there's a girl. A girl leaning rather quietly against a tree, not because she's in any way shy about making the greeting rounds, but because the tennis guys should have their bonding first. It's the first time she's seen them all together, and she pushes away from her spot, rising up on her toes and shading her eyes with a hand. ]

Gee, it's like an endless stream of jerseys out there!

see? you're totally a part of the tennis cast.

[ With the initial hello agains (and 'oh look, it's that asshole Niou's) out of the way, Niou turns his attention away from terrorizing his rivals. Rise is a much more pleasant prospect than, say, Hyoutei or Seigaku.

He could walk over and say hi, but where would the fun be in that?

Instead, he hits a (suspiciously purple) tennis ball her way - it's not too fast, and if she just stands still, it'll miss her by inches. He's hoping she'll catch it. ]

[ Rise's a little lethargic today; who knew that actually stopping for a few days made such a vital difference? She'll retire to the inn before this crazy horde moves out for dinner to nurse herself back to health, but for now, she's here.

And for now, there's a purple tennis ball flying in her direction. She moves reflexively, one hand coming up to catch it and bringing it down to eye level.

... Wait a minute, she knows this shade... ]

[ He grins.

Ambling over with supreme nonchalance: ]

You'll wanna toss that here before you're wearin' it, somehow.

[restardom]

[ yes, Rise is a girl who is not all that fond of wearing purple goo, so she tosses it back to him rather quickly. ]

I didn't think throwing Dittos was the new way to say hi.

[ Niou catches it, and it's quick to turn itself into a wristwatch, nice and unobtrusive, aside from the slightly jarring colour. ]

Just figured you'd appreciate a slightly less obnoxious way of gettin' your attention, since Plan A was 'hey, hot stuff.'

At least I'd be more used to that one. [ but she doesn't seem at all perturbed. ]

And why wouldn't I wanna surprise you?

[ He flashes her a grin and moves to lean against a tree just a few feet away. ]

How've you been?

[restardom]

Not bad; it's almost felt like kind of a vacation lately. What about you, Niou-kun? [ she returns to her own tree, inwardly glad for something to lean back against. ]

Better and better these days.

[ His eyes wander over the group, settling eventually on Yagyuu. It's not hard to guess that his partner is what's made things better lately - or at least part of it. ]

[restardom]

[ she follows his gaze, eyes softening when they land on his partner. She still doesn't know much about him, nor does she know exactly what to make of him, but he's important - to Akaya, to Yukimura, especially to Niou - and she really is glad that he's here now, for their sakes. ]

It must've been hard.

[ He looks back to her sharply at the change in her tone and the unexpected new subject. He's unsmiling, but he doesn't seem angry - just a little wary. ]

... What's that?

[ It's almost a challenge; he wants to see if she'll push forward with it, when he's obviously not taking to the topic. ]

[ she's not going to back off the subject entirely, but neither is she going to push, especially when she's not feeling well. In fact, she only holds his gaze steadily for a few long seconds before she closes her eyes. ]

Not having your whole team with you, I mean. [ not having the people who knew you best, the ones you'd been through so much with. Maybe certain people more than others, but all the same, you couldn't beat a team. ]

[ He examines her critically for a moment before relenting. She still looks tired, and he almost feels guilty for trying to make her fight him for a straight answer right now.

Looking away, back in Yagyuu's direction - ]

The whole team's still not here, but this is enough of it for me.

[ with a little smile. ] I'm still not allowed to say congratulations?

[ He rolls his eyes a little and shrugs. ]

I won't stop you. ... It's better with him around.
