I always had good luck with Vinny's. It's the little garage on the north side of Hoosick St. right before you get on the highway. It looks like a really sketchy place, but they're cheap and honest. He always explained things, showed me the broken parts (of which my car produced lots), and has a 10% discount for students.
Once, I brought my car over in the winter because the windshield wiper fluid (which was supposed to be good to -20 F) had frozen in single digit weather. He took the fluid tank out and ran it under hot water to remelt the stuff, which took a little more than half an hour. Then he fixed all the tubing and flushed it out and replaced it with washer fluid good til -40 F. And charged me $20, because he said it wasn't fair to charge me labor time for letting the tank sit in a sink. A lot of places would have charged me for the full hour's labor. They did quite a bit of work on my car while I was there, and it was always good.
My roommate actually called Vinny's about her BMW, but it's so old almost everyone won't even read the engine codes for her, except for Kaddo's. I'll keep Vinny's in mind too :). Thanks!
