I don't understand how a research PROPOSAL can be 20 pages long. I mean, a couple pages to explain why the research is important, and a couple to explain how you'll do it, but what on earth else can they require that takes up 20 friggin' pages? That's just ridiculous.

The lit review was about five pages... I had to explain what I was going to do, but then justify it, too. Us social scientists are very sensitive to the charge that what we're doing isn't 'real' research (ie. quantitative), so we spend a lot of time explaining how ethnographic research (ie. hanging out with one's friends and then writing it up) is valuable and contributes to the sum total of human knowledge, etc... heh.
