I'm burnt.  7am and I've been going at this thing since something like 11am yesterday, and I'm still not done.  There's just not enough time - I found out way too late about how big this thing is supposed to be, and now it's gonna throw my whole next two weeks or so out of whack.  And I'm going to have to mark 50-60 final exams in the next couple ( Read more... )

I got screwed on my SSHRC application last year. I did not want to do it because I was quite unhappy with the department and I couldn't find the proper application so I thought the process even worse than it actually was. Eventually my grad adviser made it clear to me that I had no choice in the matter, so I handed in two pages of crap I pulled out of an essay that I wrote in fourth year. I actually tried this year and still didn't get it; luckily for me the application for a PhD is still just 2 pages though.

As for getting less than an A, professor in the UVic grad program seem to be reluctant to give out grades below an A- to grad students. That said, the A-s I received were for very mediocre work, which I thought was worse than the inflated grade it received.

One student I know of just didn't hand in anything at all through most of his first year, so he wasn't awarded any grade. He still managed to stay in the program, somehow.

Yeah, part of the assignment was to put together a SSHRC proposal, just so we know what it's like. I basically just cut 'n pasted from the full prosposal, but I still feel like I know what it's like... painful, trying to say something amazing and compelling enough in under two pages so that they'll give you $50,000 or whatever...

The prof I was handing it in to had also given me A-s for the hastily printed, stapled-together collection of notes which were the smaller assignments, but for some reason we all had the Fear, and slaved away. I think if you're a grad student, it's in their best interest to help you along and keep the possibility of more grad school open to you - makes them look good (completion rates, etc).

Just use the power of The Secret! Visualize yourself getting it all done perfectly enough and it will happen!

Haha... but kidding aside, you can DOOOO it. You're a smartie, when you decide to be.
