Themes Take Two (The Short List)

Feb 08, 2016 10:47

So, we got them down from 14 to a much more manageable seven.  Yay us!  Now let's discuss them, keeping in mind that we need to pick Team Designations as well, and we'll decide by Feb 14th.  Does that work?

1. In Sickness and in Health: I pitched this two years back, too late for it to be considered. Since then, I have become even more attached ( Read more... )

I think this is a really great idea and could produce some super interesting works, but I also feel like it would be better for it's own fest, unique rather than for The Games. Y'all probably know this, but my reservations mostly center around the fact that it feels very specific and I suspect that would produce a lot of stories/art that might have a very similar theme or feel - and that has the potential to limit readership. That said, it really needs to be a fest sometime. People would really dig it, but I just fear that it doesn't play as broadly as some of the rest of these.

I agree with you, it does seem like it would suit a stand-alone fest rather than a theme for the games because it is so specific (as themes go).

And again, the potential for a large angsty number of pieces is there as well.

So this definitely needs a better tagline:
It's About Time?
Time Keeps on Slippin' Into The Future?
There Will Be Time?
The Time Has ComeThough perhaps not as much as the Beginnings/Endings one, this is a theme that could lend itself very well to the idea of transition - especially if we picked a really great tagline ( ... )

This is just me going through my iTunes for theme title inspirations.

"The Times, they are a-changing"?
"Signs of the Times"?
"Time and Time Again"?
"Wasn't That a Time"?
"As Time Goes By"?

I feel like this is a safe, easy choice, but also a very "pretty" one. (Like it's one that artists might really be able to run with.) What I guess I mean is that it could lead to some very descriptive pieces. To me it skews either happy or funny, which could be a concern, but I also feel as if it is easier to take a "sunny" theme and make it dark, that a "dark" theme and make it sunny. But that's just me basing it off that one year where it was like angst-o-rama!

This could also be like any Team Designation.

I think this would spawn great art, probably some very descriptive fic and is perfectly lovely but it personally doesn't excite me.

This is another really beautiful one, that makes me think of things like Valentines Day and the Five Languages of Love. I especially like that it is at the heart (pun-intended) of the ship and very what we strive for/like about The Games. It's also an element that we find in most all of the stories and art that we get. (Obviously, I suppose, because it is a story about love and romance.) Another thing that I really like is that it could work well for art and other creative formats, not just stories.

My only concern is that people might take it a little TOO literally and we might end-up with an overabundance of love and romance. (The opposite of our super angsty year). That said, there are people who tend toward angst, anyway, and love can be super angsty and depressing. LOL.

This could work for any team designations, but it kinda feels personal to me, like it wants to be Remus v. Sirius in some form. Or, we could play on the way the expressions are expression and do something like Magic V. Muggle. Or something new?

This is truly the perfect theme for a transition year! It also encompasses some of the main tropes of Remus/Sirius, canon OR AU, and that has really great appeal ( ... )

Yeah, I think MWPP vs Post-Hogwarts might work well for this one. But we might also want to encourage the teams to equally tackle firsts and lasts.

This was on my first list of themes, so I do like it but my one BIG reservation is exactly what Brighty has already mentioned about people taking this theme too literally. I feel like there is the potential for participants to focus on the most obvious aspects of this ship. Maybe I am not giving participants enough credit, but even in thinking of prompts for this theme I feel that this may be a bit limiting (or my mind is limited in its ability to think of interesting prompts for this lol). I just feel that other themes have more potential.
