don't close out those cards once you've paid them off, at least not all of them

your credit score stays high if you have a lot of available credit but only use 25-30% or less of it.

If you cancel all the cards, you have less available credit, and your score with go down.

I paid off my first credit card last fall, then I screamed the greatest scream!!! Literally. Then I got a nasty note on my door from my passive-agressive neighbor. Bastard.
Ironically, after I returned from the post office from dropping my check in the mail, I recieved an "upgrade" card. Because that's what I really needed: a different looking card with the same number and credit limit. Ugh! I hate credit! But now I'm done with credit cards. I'm not cancelling my old card, but I'm certainly not using it unless my head is bleeding and using my card is the only way to stop the blood loss.
