I ask on behalf, but wonder on bewhole.

Anyone know much about Microsoft CMS?

Would anyone replace it with something else they could name?

I definitely wouldn't replace it with the little webserver I implemented in Matlab.

I can neither confirm nor deny the horror felt by all when we realized it could be done.

Depends on the need - Microsoft also own Navision who make a competent replacement for some needs; MatrixOne likewise; heck a simple Wiki would do some of the job (e.g. Confluence or OpenWiki).

It really depends - if SharePoint does the job then that's the best option (i.e. the cost of change > the cost of staying put). If it's simply inadequate then decide what's needed requirement-wise... and go from there.
