Daughter. We are back to Safe For Work! Yay!
Meivu ran her fingers through her hair, lifting up the layers to be sure none of the brown dye remained. Both Zahra and Briar had assured her it was completely gone before she left; but if the sunlight showed even a drop of evidence she was doubtlessly in for a scolding from one of her sisters. Probably Euria, she always was the bossy one.
“Ah, sister! Back from your holiday in the human lands?” a river-daughter hailed her from the ford, rising up out of the shallow water as a spray of mist and condensing into the form of a young woman (well, they were all women, or at least of female shape) with eager eyes and fish scales for hair. One of her hundreds of kin. Meivu didn’t know her face, but that meant nothing.
“Greetings, sister,” she said, bristling inside that they thought it was a mere holiday instead of a relocation. “How fares River Tallulah, may She run forever, and Her many daughters?” The River was among the most sacred in the world, and while she was proud to have sprung from such a strong Mother, the worship the water spirits heaped upon their parent was tiring. There were so many customs to follow, rituals to attend (and even head), and the expectation was that one never left the River’s side except on official business as ambassador or such.
Meivu had always been sure she was made for something else, something wider than frolicking in the rapids or guarding the fords or even fighting the wood spirits over territory.
Damn it, she already missed her freedom.
“The Abundant One is well, and the wood spirits have fallen back before Her anger. Our sisters rejoice tonight, and your coming, dear one, is more reason to celebrate.” The still-nameless water spirit turned then, forming feet as she waded out of the water and beckoned Meivu to follow on the far bank.
