Jhera woke up to voices and a door creaking. She was still half asleep but hadn't opened her eyes yet, expecting to see a bunch of men standing outside her cell door. Slowly, she cracked an eye open to see a gril who looked to be her age staring back at her, with presumably her parents behind her.

Oh. Not jail anymore. Right.

She closed her eye again and pulled her blankets up farther intending to try and get a few more minutes of sleep in. Of course, this plan didn't work as her roommate's father began to rant about his daughter having to room with a 'barbarian'.

When it was clear that the man wouldn't stop, she got up and walked out of the room without saying a word to any of the new people in her room. There were more people in the halls today as the rest of the students were moving in.

Jhera walked down the hall, ignoring the looks she was getting. Seeing that Gharak's door was slightly open, she walked right in and sat down on her friend's bed without saying a word. She looked curiously at the other person in the room.

The person continued the unpacking that he had been doing when Jhera barged in. He was probably a good foot taller than her and had dark blond hair. She watched him work before he turned around and crossed his arms.

"Are you done staring at me yet, or would you like me to stand here so you can study me for a little while longer?" He sneered at her and she responded by rolling her eyes and then closing them, leaning her head against the wall. She could hear him leaving, probably heading down for breakfast.

Gharak woke up a few minutes after she arrived and looked at the girl now sitting on his bed with her back against the wall. She was wearing a navy blue long-sleeve shirt with a pair of light grey sleeping shorts. Her long, dark hair was falling loosely around her shoulders. Overall, she looked tired and slightly annoyed.

"I take it your roommate and her family arrived and they didn't take things well." Jhera glared at him out of the corner of her eyes. "And you decided you had to leave without taking the time to change out of your pajamas?"

She sighed and curled up on her side at the foot of his bed. Gharak starting pushing at her with his feet which caused Jhera to start mumbling at him under her breath. At which point he sat up and leaned over to whisper in her ear.

"You know, if you want to get some more sleep," he started suggestively, before she hit him on the back of the head and he collapsed backward into a fit of laughter. Jhera followed shortly afterward.

she was halfway out of the door before she turned around and said, "thank you, I definitely needed to cheer up. by the way, it looks like there's a note on all the doors."

When she entered her room again, no one was there, so she got changed and decided to go up to the roof.

Jhera and Gharak had managed to avoid a majority of the students and were now heading over to the Main Building as the notes on the doors had instructed.

The walked through the doors and were ushered into a large gymnasium where a large portion of the first years were waiting. Everyone was wearing tank tops that matched the red of their uniform jackets with the school's logo in whit on the left chest. The were also wearing black sweatpants with "The Academy" written in red along the right leg.

A few of the students were wearing sweatshirts too. These were also black and had the school's logo on the back in white. Both Jhera and Gharak were wearing theirs in hope of drawing as little attention to themselves as possible. Jhera especially wanted to hid the  markings down her arms which if seen, would cause as much of an uproar as her skin color normally did. Gharak, on the other hand, didn't need to worry as much since his marks were down his right side from about chest level to just aboe his hip. They also wanted to hide the bonding rings around their arms for as long as possible.

As it got closer to the start of the testing, the rest of the first years trickled in. Jhera and Gharak stood off to the side and heard most of the girls getting really excited and turning toward the entrance to the gymnasium. They could clearly pick out some of the comments that were running through the crowd.

Look! The Dean's son is here!

He's so attractive!

I can't believe that we might end up in the same class as him!

They listened to them chattering for a while and then they saw the crowd parting. When she saw the person walking to the front of the crowd, Jhera turned to Gharak and raised an eyebrow.

"Your roommate is the Dean's son?" She asked, "did you know?"

Gharak shook his head in reply. "They think he's good looking though? I don't get it."

"I'm not surprised," she said and crossed her arms.

He stared at her. "Wait. Are you attracted to him?"

She raised both her eyebrows this time and looked toward the front of the room where the Dean and a few other men and women stood.

"QUIET!" One of the men shouted over the conversations among the students. "I'd like to introduce you to the Dean of The Academy."

The Dean stepped up beside the man. "As Mr. Hauwden said, I am Dean Sebright and I'd like to welcome each of you to The Academy, where you will hopefully enjoy learning for the next three years. As you all know, today we will be testing you to see which of the elements you will be focusing in. You will be split into two groups by gender. The women will be going with Mrs. Deschale and Ms. Merrist while the men will go with Mr. Naryll and Mr. Hauwden. I'd like all the women to move to the wall of the gymnasium on my left and all the men to do the same on my right." He waited a moment while the students all shuffled to the correct sides of the gym. "Once your tests are finished, you will be free until dinner. Later tonight, your third year advisers will hand out hour schedules for the year based on your test results. Classes will begin tomorrow morning."

~~~~~~~~~~
The women followed the two female medics down a hallway into a large practice room in the basement of the main building. This room was probably just less that half the size of the gymnasium on the floor above and had two chairs with machines surrounding them.
Everyone filed into the room and faced the two women who had them there. Mrs. Deschale was an elderly woman with a kind face. She had grey hair and a few wrinkles across her forehead and at the corners of her mouth and eyes. Ms. Merrist, on the other hand, appeared to be no more than ten years older than the first years. Her eyes looked like they were dancing with a nervous energy and she almost appeared to be bounding slightly on the balls of her feet.
"The first thing we will do it call out your names in alphabetical order so you can form a line. When it is your turn, you will sit in the chair and Ms. Merrist will attach some sensors to your forehead and your arms. She will also be putting a mask over your eyes so you can't see anything. The machines will then project a few tests into your brain and see how you respond to them. This will let us know which element you have an aptitude for, which is what your schedules will be based off of." She started reading the list of names as everyone scrambled to get into the right place in line.
