this. I highly recommend (re)reading that first.
“This is boring,” Chloe declared, throwing her yellow dump truck on the carpet.
Tyler bobbed his head in agreement. “It’s more fun when Finn plays.”
She crossed her arms. “He just wants to play with Daddy. He should play with us more.”
“Maybe they’re done. Let’s go ask him.”
The two children abandoned the pile of toy vehicles and Tyler’s road-print rug to investigate the possibility. They had just reached the garage door when a shriek erupted from the kitchen. “Mommy!” Tyler cried, immediately turning that way. He and Chloe ran across the living room and slid on stocking feet over the kitchen tile. Chloe slipped and landed on her rear, letting out a stunned cry, but Tyler did not notice. Mommy was probably hurt. She might need him to fix her.
As he skirted around the counter, he saw Mommy whap Daddy, hard, with her apron, while Finn leaned against the cupboards and laughed until he was nearly blue. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again,” said Mommy. Her hair was a little rumpled and her eyes too wide, but Tyler could see that she was fine otherwise.
Daddy held up a folded paper towel stained with red and waved it in front of Mommy’s nose. “What, you don’t like my present?” he asked, with a grin. Mommy hit him with the apron again.
“Can’t…breathe…” Finn gasped out. He slowly sank to the floor, clutching his stomach.
Chloe righted herself and came to stand next to Tyler. “Grown-ups are weird,” she said, shaking her head at them.
Tyler pouted a little. Mommy didn’t need him after all. He would have liked to be the hero.
