Weekly Opinion Poll #5: What do you hate about being a rural goth?

I know I've mentioned this before, but I miss dancing. I miss the "excuse" to dress up more often. Sometimes when I watch Gypsy 83 I feel this little tug in my chest, like, "Oh yeah, I used to want to get out of small towns." But that usually fades away after I turn off the TV ( Read more... )

Well I'm quite lucky in that I can still do trips to London and catch up with my dressing up needs. So really have the best of both worlds - solitude and stunning countryside when I need it and a dose of social now and again

That really is the best of both worlds! London is such a wonderful place to have access to. :)

I think what I dislike about being outside a metro area is the lack of arts culture. To check out art openings and live music, I have to drive, and since I can be lazy about driving somewhere, it translates to me not getting out to those things that I do enjoy.

I'm the same. I live one hour away from a small-ish city that gets interesting shows once in a while, and three hours away from two major cities that get great shows constantly. But I'm not as up for random six hour round trip jaunts as I used to be!

i guess i don't miss dancing, since the places i used to go got so full of lookie-loos (you know, those 'gawk at the weirdos and freaks' normals that would be let in to the clubs), or the dance floors would be full of rivetheads thrashing about and hitting you, or scantily-clad chicks who thought they were belly-dancers and doing a right poor job of it...basically, the 'goth' scene and concept got so polluted that it ceased to have the elegance, grace, and beauty it once had. nothing lasts forever. (but so many keep trying so hard! sad ( ... )

heehee! at least you have a sense of humor about it! ;)

oh and i gotta tell ya, i just <3 your vicious lil' icon...as a ferret-person (weasel-cousin!) i find it awfully darned cute in a bloodthirsty kinda way. we're in a lot of the same communities, it seems; i've seen you before. :)

He's not as vicious as he looks, he's actually munching on some toast.

Yeah i think i've seen your icon around, is it Rachel Huntingdon's 'Vincent' ? She's from where i went to University and lots of the flyers for alternative club nights were by her.

I hate not having any place to go out and dance. I hate not having any museums or the like to go to. I hate not having a multicultural vibe like there was in Los Angeles or even San Diego. I hate not having a decent fabric store! At least we're getting a new bead store.... I hate not having a place to buy music- no, I do not consider MallWart a place to buy music.

And more than anything, I hate the lack of jobs. Not only is this place rural, it's had a depressed local economy for far longer than the national economy has been depressed. So we're really fucked.

I feel your pain on every point you mentioned, especially the lack of jobs. I know it's hard everywhere, but it's really obvious in smaller communities. Boo.

no museums, I really love museums.
No meet ups with like minded people. No chance of larp.
No going out in the evening.
No friendship group to pick up new music from.

Wow, I've not larp'ed in over a decade! I still keep my books in the hope that one day I'll be able to put together a game again, but who knows if that will actually happen. What sucks is that the boonies have so many wonderful places to play, but it's so much harder to find other people to play with!
