Holiday Movies

Leaving me alone all day in a library with no patrons and a bag of truffles is a bad idea. Seriously, it's dead in here. If it weren't for Bing Crosby on the CD player I'd be asleep. Nobody wants to sue anybody the week of Christmas.

While Kirstyn was here, we watched our traditional Christmas movie, The Ref. Okay, not exactly Miracle on 34th ( Read more... )

My favorite is White Christmas. I had missed it on TV so many years that I finally found it on DVD. Now to find the DVD and actually watch it some time!

That's a good one too. I don't know why old movies seem to capture the spirit of the season so much better than new ones, but IMO, they do.

If you can't find your DVD, just tune in to AMC on Xmas Eve; White Christmas is all they're playing, all day. (Christmas day is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, for some reason...)

Oh, Bing is the King of Christmas. I grew up watching his Christmas specials every year - I love him.

We have an old VHS copy of Wonderful Life, but I haven't watched it yet - probably will on Christmas Eve before church. Scrooged is a fun film - I'll bet it's out on DVD.

While You Were Sleeping and Love Actually. I think I burnt out on all the 'traditional' ones. I can't even watch "A Christmas Story" anymore either, which I loved as a kid.

Love Actually is a fantastic movie, great cast. My husband like While You Were Sleeping, but (and I guess I have to turn in my girl card) I really don't care for it - Sandra Bullock annoys me to the point where I want to slap her face every time I see her.

Oh, so many great ones! It's a Wonderful Life gets me right there, every single time. Ditto A Christmas Carol (1951, Alistair Sim), whose B&W cinematography is brilliant and whose Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come scares the daylights out of me every time. Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, A Christmas Story, Scrooged, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (for a slightly different mood)... I have many favourites. :)

All of those are great choices. I have George C. Scott's Christmas Carol on VHS, so that's the one I normally see, but I like the 1951 version a lot too (and the Muppet version, which I actually used to show to my 7th grade English students when we read the Dickens story)
