I am rereading The Lord of the Rings for the first time in eight years or so, now that the memory of the films has faded and I can enjoy the books as books again. Right now I am about halfway through Fellowship, and I am puzzled ( Read more... )

Because they can only track him by the Ring if he's actually wearing it. That's why DON'T PUT THE DAMN THING ON is so important. ;)

I still haven't figured out why they didn't just get on the backs of those giant eagles and fly into Mordor.

Maybe the nazgul can only smell the ring at short distances? I know I can only smell pie at short distances.

Ashkitty and just_ruth give part of the answer; the other part, according to the author, is that the Nazghul are not at that point at full strength, partly for the need for secrecy (to avoid tipping off the White Council to how close to ready Sauron is).

Yeah that! I don't have a good answer as to the eagle thing, though. I used to talk about the fact that Sauron actually has pretty decent air force protection what with the winged Nazgul, but they don't at that stage. Of course by the time they actually decided to destroy the ring, the Nazgul were also getting close to the point of getting their wings. And ya gotta factor the time it takes to convince the eagles to do anything...

Someone on FB pointed out that the Ring is self-willed, and if dropped above Mount Doom, it would manage not to fall into the pit!

The Eagles are under the direct command of Manwe (lord of the air) who has decided along with the other Valar to not interfere in the affairs of Middle Earth. So rescuing the heroes after they've defeated the bad guy: okay; helping defeat the bad guy: breaking the rules/cheating. (Last time they sank a continent!)
