Chapter 8 “What?! You’re kidding!” Ren couldn’t believe his ears. Yamato called Ishida…Goda? That’s just not possible! Goda is alive, for god’s sake!
“Oho ho ho.” Makoto chuckled, her smile widened a bit and she raised a thin brow at the brunette. “Some things never change, do they, Ogata? Glad to know your bite still exist. My, my,…”
“You sound like an old hag. Didn’t think you’d behave that way.” Yamato sneered sarcastically.
“Well, what can I say? Living in this body for five years can do that to you.” Makoto…that is, Goda smirked. “Having this body in my possession is…interesting. The things I can do…they excite me. Like, cursing a soul for example…”
The corner of Yamato’s lip twitched as he glared at the old woman. Without turning, he muttered, “Ren, wake everyone up and take them away from this house.”
Ren looked at him, slightly worried. At the same time, Goda replied lightly, almost casually, “But there’s no need to send them away. They’re your guests, after all. Why not let them stay?”
The dark-haired boy was hesitant. He wasn’t sure if he should wake the others up. Who knows what’ll happen next.
“Ren...” Yamato trailed, turning his gaze to him with eyes slightly larger then usual. “Just do it…”
Ren slowly nodded and headed towards the others.
“Hm…well now, if you’re giving them the wake up call, I guess I can let the cat out of the bag.” Goda smirked widely, giving Ishida’s face a somewhat menacing look.
The brunette immediately turned back to face the other, his eyes narrowed and his lips parted just slightly. He felt a flick of panic. He didn’t expect Goda to say anything…about him. Or was it something he never knew about?
“Ah…good. They’re all awake now, hm?” Goda raised a brow approvingly.
“Owww, my guts. I can’t believe Yamato kicked me!” Honjou groaned, wrapping both arms around his midsection and swaying left and right.
“My neckkk…” Kura whined, craning his head and rubbing his neck with a hand. “He packs a powerful punch…or karate chop or whatever it’s called.”
Kamiya gritted his teeth through the pain as he glared up. He suddenly coughed in surprise. “Wha? Ishida-san? What are you doing here?!”
Everyone looked up, shock written all over their faces.
"Um...guys,..." Ren spoke up, only to be interrupted by Goda.
"Oh, I'm just visiting Yamato-chan here. It's been...I don't know...five years since I last seen him." Goda replied, mockingly pleasant. The elder woman looked up to Yamato and added, a bit acidly, "I just want to remind him of that particular accident that brings me shame because he wasn't able to do a single good thing for me."
"That's rather rude, Yamato." Kura raised a brow. "You didn't help her carry groceries or something?"
"You should help once in a while, Yamato-kun. A woman her age shouldn't work by herself." Yankumi frowned, scolding lightly on Yamato as if he was a small child. Yamato growled in annoyance.
"Guys," Ren sighed loudly in frustration. "let me break it to you." He pointed to Goda. "That is NOT Ishida-san. That is Goda."
Kamiya let out a laugh, slapping down a hand repeatedly and shaking his head. "Have you hit your head? That is not Goda. Goda's no woman and he's alive."
"Wrong." Yamato finally spoke up. He glanced over to everyone. "Goda died five years ago. He died in a serious brawl with another gang."
"Now I know you're lying." Ichi replied with doubt. "I'm pretty knowledgeable with current events. Why haven't I heard about this?"
"...The news was never reached to the media. It was in a private location." The brunette turned his eyes away as he replied.
"But how...do you know about this?"
"Because he used to be in my gang." The short woman piped up, causing everyone to turn to her.
"My gang? My?...OH MY GOD, YOU ARE GODA, AREN"T YOU?!" Kura pointed in surprise, backing up just slightly.
"And Shorty here gets a cookie." Goda chuckled sarcastically. "That's right. I'm Goda. Got a problem with it, Shorty?"
Kura immediately shook his head in reply. He didn't even shout back for being called Shorty.
"Ogata here didn't tell you anything about us so I thought to give you a little snippet of his history when we first met. Now that I'm feeling a little generous, I'll be a storyteller for one night before you all can go to hell." Goda smirked.
"Heh? Wha-?" Kura spoke up before stopping himself abruptly to Goda's sudden glare. Man, the old chick sure is scary.
"Now then, where should I start?" Goda wondered, now that he had everyone's attention. Yamato wisely stayed silent. He didn't interrupt because he wanted him to fill in several gaps that had him confused the first time he woke up alone in this house. As much as he wanted to send him to hell himself, Goda was the only person who knew all the answers. "Ah...I know. About this body." He pointed to himself. "As Ogata said, I did die in a brawl. A third of my gang was killed by a surprise attack with our rival gang two months before my graduation from Bakadou Academy." He gave a smug smirk to the current students who looked as if they were about to pounce on him for that remark. He continued as if nothing happened. "Afterwards...I don't know what happened but I woke as a spirit in the middle of our hideout. Everyone was gone besides those who are dead. I was so pissed at this. So utterly pissed...Next thing I knew, I stood in front of this old hag's house. She had died two hours before I did, due to a heart attack. Someone already went to informed of her death so out of impulse, I went for her body and before I knew it, I was able to possess it."
Goda flexed the little fingers in front of him, his lowered eyes widened like a maniac's. He was grinning widely. "The media was informed and they told some story about the fact that she was dead right before they inspected the body. So the next day, the media came along and I told them that I fainted and woke up later that day. Stupid idiots bought it and left. And you know what? Having this body isn't a bad deal once I realized I had inherit her powers, fame, and wealth. Still..."
He raised a brow to Yamato, who gave the other a hard glare the entire time. "I'm not satisfied with it. I wanted revenge. You remember, don't you, Ogata?"
The corner of the brunette's lip twitched in reply.
"Here's a little tidbit of what the other gang leader told me before I killed him and mutilated his body." Yankumi gasped soundly in shock. "He told me that someone in my own gang wanted to escape so they were in a mutual agreement and made a plan. That certain someone then informed him of our whereabouts and when would be a perfect time to ambush them. Know anyone like that, Ogata?" Goda's eyes narrowed to the brunette. "And after they found the location and attacked in surprise, the ambush finally led to a brawl." His hand suddenly went into the yukata. "You were the one who made me suffer. You were the one who got me killed. You think I would let that go?"
Everyone gasped as Goda pulled out a gun and pointed at him. Ren instinctively stood in front of the brunette. "You were like a younger brother to me. I watched and took care of you ever since we've first met even before you and your old man argued...and this is what you've done to me."
"You were no brother to me. You who care about no one but yourself." Yamato spoke up, gritting his teeth in anger.
Goda laughed, a high-pitched mocking laugh that cause the everyone but Yamato to flinch. "Oh...you know me all too well. But unlike like me, you have many whom you cared about. These idiots here..." He pointed his gun to the others. Yamato took a step forward in panic. "and especially that brat." He gestured to Ren. "But who cares about that? After I'm done with them, you will be all alone again."
He smirked and turned to the panicked students and teacher before pulling the trigger.
"ALL OF YOU, RUN!" Yankumi shouted and everyone scrambled to hide. The teacher dove behind the couch with Honjou and Ichi. As she did, a sharp clang was heard beneath her. She looked down in confusion. It was a small gold locket that her grandfather gave her right after her parents' death. He told her it was a locket but no matter how hard she tried, it wouldn't open. Her grandfather laugh and told her that the locket will open at a certain time. And it must've been now because the locket cracked open. Inside, was a neatly folded thin yellow paper. Paper? She pulled it out and unfolded. Her eyes widened when she realized it was a talisman. And judging by its markings, it was one for warding off spirits.
"YAMATO!" She heard Honjou cried in shock. Ichi followed soon after. She immediately became worried and looked up from the couch. A gasp left her lips at the sight.
Yamato's back was facing the room but they could see him kneeling in front of Goda...in front of the gun in his hand. The brunette gripped around Goda's arm tightly to prevent him from shooting the others. He glared up to the elder woman while Goda merely raised a brow.
"Yamato-kun, what are you doing?! You have to get away! He'll shoot you!" Yankumi shouted in panic. She couldn't stand the thought of anyone being killed. She would feel nothing but sadness and regret.
"Yamato, you idiot! Get away from him!" Ren shouted from the other side of the room. He, Kamiya, and Kura had ducked in the next room.
"Oho..." Goda gave our a low chuckle. "I don't think there's a need for that. You see..."
He grinned malevolently and leaned towards at the brunette, who's eyes widened by his next words. "Ogata Yamato is already dead. He's been dead for over a year."
"You lie! He's not dead!" Ren yelled angrily.
"Oh? Is that so? I'll prove it to you then." Goda then pulled the trigger and a loud bang was heard.
"YAMATO!"
The brunette let out a grunt by the impact of the shot as the bullet sped in and out of his body, his head fell forward. He heard everyone calling his name as he grimaced to himself. Shit...He looked up to Goda, who was still grinning and mouthed almost invisibly, The jig's up.
Yankumi covered her mouth in surprise when she didn't see a single drop of blood spill from his body. Nothing besides a slight hole on his white t-shirt. He looked completely unharmed.
"Y-Yamato...?" Ichi uttered out slowly.
Yamato stayed silent. He didn't know what to say to them now that they knew.
"Surprised?" Goda asked, breaking the silence. "I bet you all feel crushed that Ogata didn't bother telling it to you. Ah, don't worry about that. I can tell you everything because I can't shoot any of you yet. Too bad this body doesn't have any physical strength. Otherwise, I'd do all of you in mere seconds."
Yamato's eyes narrowed. "You knew." You knew everything, didn't you?
Goda tilted his head slightly, meeting the other's eyes. "Of course." I did it, after all.
"You...I don't get it. How can Yamato be dead? We can see him. We can even touch him!" Kura looked around in confusion.
"I'll tell you what happened then." Goda seemed to have replied to Kura's question but he still locked eyes with Yamato. "Ah, I remember as if it was only yesterday. I remember your old man leaving that fateful day...and I..." He gave a short chuckle. "coincidentally met up with him to discuss about a few things. You, mostly."
The brunette slowly raised a brow in reply.
"We've met over at the old hag's house, where I offered a cup of tea and my plan to him and see if he would agree or not. You know what that is?" He paused to lean a little closer. "It's to curse your soul so that you would stay here for eternity." He smirked and pulled away, satisfied by the look on Yamato's face. "But your old man didn't agree to it. He said that he really hate the fact that you chose to be a delinquent but there was no need to take your life away. Since he didn't want to do it, I had to...persuade him."
"What did you say to him?" Yamato growled softly.
"I told him the tea he drank was poisonous and if he wanted to live, he'd do as I say. Works like a charm, if you ask me." Goda laughed at the thought. "And I don't think you remember about this so I'll give you a heads up. Your dad stabbed you on the back multiple times and then pushed you off the stairs back there." He gestured to the stairway behind him. “Not a pretty sight, I might add.”
“But eventually,” he let out an inaudible sigh, smirking still. “He burned the body and put it in that jar you see right there.” He pointed over to the small jar in Ren’s hands. Ren nearly dropped the jar in surprise while Kamiya and Kura leaned back, mouths agape. “Then I put wards on it, yadda yadda yadda,…you know, just so that you won’t be able to find it. And also, I cursed you here and erased everyone’s memories of you.” Goda waved the other hand lazily. Already, he was getting bored of the story. So what else is new?
“And…my old man?” The brunette slowly asked, his voice low.
“You actually want to know about what happened to him?” Goda raised both eyebrows and laughed. “Hm, if that’s what you want. In fact, I’ll be happy to tell you about his demise. It was so fun…”
Yamato’s eyes narrowed but he stayed silent.
“Let’s see…after all those wonderful little things we’ve done, I just told him to head out of the country by taking the bus to the airport. He demand for an antidote beforehand so I gave him painkillers as a substitute because I didn’t poison him in the first place. Stupid idiot.” He snorted and continued. “I did happen to curse him though. During the bus ride, the bus happened to...fall off a cliff.”
Goda grinned widely. “Oh, oh, I think you definitely want to know about this, Ogata. I broke the news with your mother.” Yamato’s eyes went slightly larger. “I told her that her son died in a bus accident when he was heading up the mountain for a school trip. Your poor mother took that one quite badly. She died two weeks after due to depression over her dead son. Boo hoo.”
Goda rubbed his fist against his eye and pretended to cry before laughing loudly.
That caused Yamato to snap in rage. He growled and pushed the other down soundly, his body hovering over Goda’s. Goda gritted his teeth in both surprise and irritation and began pulling the trigger over and over. He didn’t care about the others at the moment.
“Yamato-“ Ren and the others were about to head over to the brunette but Yamato snapped, “Yamaguchi! Use the goddamn talisman. NOW.”
“O-Okay!” Yankumi immediately stood up, flinching visibly over the loud sounds of the gun. She trotted over to the two, leaning back a little in caution. She crouched down in front of the brunette and held out the talisman. Goda glared up at her as he tried to break free of Yamato’s hold. “W-What do I do now?”
“Stick it to her forehead. And you better make sure you put it on right.” Yamato instructed in a hard voice.
“Um…okay.” She looked at the yellow strip of paper and checked to see which side is up. Once she picked a side, she pressed the talisman firmly to Goda’s forehead.
“NOOOOO!!!” Goda let out a loud, ear-splitting shriek, his back arched up and his arms bent at odd angles as his spirit left Makoto’s body. The body turned lax immediately after. Moments later, silence filled the room.
“It’s over…?” Kura stepped into the room with hesitance.
“I shouldn’t have let him talk so much…” Yamato muttered under his breath as he moved away to inspect the holes on his shirt.
Honjou collapsed to the floor with a deep sigh. “That was so suspenseful. It’s too much…”
"Yeah...I know what you mean." Ichi agreed as he pushed himself up to the couch and sat down.
"O...Ogata..." Yankumi whispered, her hand on her temple as she glanced over to him in recognition.
The brunette turned to her and replied just as softly, "...You remembered now."
The teacher slowly nodded. "Goda mentioned that...he erased our memories...didn't he?"
Before Yamato could reply, Kura pounced at him from behind. "Yamato! I can't believe I forgot about you! How could Goda do this to us? Thanks to him, I had forgotten one of my best friends for a year!" He wailed as he tightly wrapped both arms around Yamato and clinged to him.
Yamato looked over his shoulders, mildly surprised. He gave the other a small smile. The others gathered around the brunette.
Kamiya kneeled beside him, inspecting him carefully as if he was a stranger. "It's really you..."
"Obviously." Honjou grinned as he too jumped on Yamato (with Kura still on his back). The three landed in a heap on the floor.
"My god, you are heavy..." Yamato uttered, nearly breathless.
Everyone laughed. The brunette looked around the room, at the smiling faces of his friends and teacher. This reminded him of the old times where everyone was having fun together. They would head out to do karaoke, hang out in and out of school, get scolded by Yankumi, and many other things. But now...he knew this would be their last time together. He would never be able to be together with his friends anymore.
"Yamato? What's wrong? You're having that 'serious moment' again." Kura petted his head as he peeked over Yamato's shoulder. The brunette simply flicked his forehead, which caused the other to yelp in surprise. "That because you and Honjou wouldn't get off of me."
"Oh? Ohhh,...fine, fine. Get off, Honjou!" Kura pushed the blonde off his back before sitting up.
"Um...Yamato?"
Yamato looked up to see Ren holding out the jar uneasily. "Ah..." He stood up and without taking the jar, he shook his head and said quietly, "...I can't touch it. I'm unable to..."
"Then...what should I do with...you know." Ren didn't want to say it. If he did, then he admitted that...Yamato is no longer in the living world.
"Well...if you want to break its curse on me, then you should...go outside to the garden and dig a small hole. After, pour it from the jar and cover it with dirt...that's it." Yamato explained, his eyes trailed down as he finished.
No one said a word.
"...So..." Kamiya decided to break the uncomfortable silence. "This means..."
"That's right." Yamato's voice was barely above a whisper. "I'll be gone." He glanced over to each of his friends and Yankumi. "It's...alright. You guys can take care of yourselves without me."
"Yamato..." Kura was now teary-eyed.
"Don't cry, you idiot." Yamato wrapped an arm around the shorter boy. "Smiling is more suitable for you."
Kura snorted but he smiled a bit.
"I guess...we should do it. We don't want you to stay here forever, Yamato." Honjou cleared his throat before dragging Ren and Kura out the door. The brunette noticed the blonde's eyes was beginning to water. He guessed Honjou didn't want anyone to see him crying.
Suddenly, pale red beams of light poured through the windows of the dining room, signifying the waking sun across the horizon. It was almost morning.
"Ah...sunrise." Yankumi whispered.
"Mm..." Ichi hummed in agreement.
"Okay, we're finished." Honjou poked his head into the house as Ren walked back into the room followed by Kura.
Yamato looked down to his outstretched hands. He could see the floor through his hands. Everyone glanced at Yamato sadly.
"I really don't want you to go..." Ren muttered. "Because guess what I remember first? I remember you, my childhood friend,...kissing me when we were young. I remember us actually having a relationship before all this. Why does this have to happen to you?"
The brunette merely raised a brow before heading over to the dark-haired boy. "You're being so overly dramatic, Ren. So unlike you." He pressed his lips against Ren's. In front of everyone.
"Ahh, stop! You're making me blush!" Kura covered his face with both hands.
"So? It's your fault for watching." Yamato parted with a wide smile. He patted Ren's shoulder and headed towards the door but before he did, he turned to them, his smile widened into a grin. "I'll see you guys soon, na."
He raised a hand in farewell, walking into the soft sunlight and vanished.
"He's gone...can I cry now?" Ichi sniffed.
"Do it later. We need to get home now." Kura pushed the other out the door, waving to the rest. "See you!"
"Guess we'll be going too. Come on, Honjou. Later." Kamiya and Honjou left moments later, leaving Ren and Yankumi.
"Ren..." Yankumi began.
"It's alright." The younger interrupted, shaking his head. "Yamato said we'll see each other again. I'll have him hold up to that promise."
The teacher simply smiled. "That's right. Well...let's go. Your sister must be worried sick."
Ren nodded in reply and followed Yankumi out the door. Stepping outside, he looked back into the house.
Until we meet again, Yamato.
The End.
A/N: IT'S OVER!! DDD: I don't know if this is a good ending or a bad ending. Bwahhh...I don't know what to say. ;_; Oh wait, there's one. Thank you to those who read this story. I don't know if it's any good to you but I'm happy if you like it even if it's pretty sad. Until next time. Ja ne!
