A week later, Kevin finally picked up courage to ask his many unanswered questions. In case he forgets them, he even wrote them down on a small piece of paper he brought with him everywhere. This ensures that when he thought of Kibum and then a question he wants to ask the man, he could pen it down easily.

1. Why do you write?

Kibum chuckled at Kevin’s question, gesturing for him to sit down so they could chat over a cup (Kibum’s) of coffee. Kevin instantly agreed, forgetting that hole Soohyun tried to burn in his head with those fiery eyes. “I write because I’ve always been interested in literature, and psychology.”

“Huh?” Kevin blinked twice, trying to link the two subjects together.

“A story.” Kibum started with a calm smile. “Or a novel, to be exact in my case, needs at least two characters to develop nicely. Other than using the exact words to describe the current mood, atmosphere, setting, and the feeling one of the character is giving off, a writer needs to know what the character is thinking, and how he’d interact with the other.”

Kevin nodded, fascinated by the answer he got - Kibum was so deep.

“I write also to give others another point of view very little people considered.” Kibum added as an afterthought, sipping his coffee as he continued typing away, once in a while looking up at Kevin. “I don’t like those books out there in the market with plots so repetitive I don’t know why they even sell, but everyone has his and her own preferences.”

The waiter decided he was supposed to understand what Kibum just said, keeping quiet and just nodding. He pretended not to notice the sharp edge in Kibum’s voice.

2. Why…me?

“You’re the complete opposite of my main character, sort of, you see.” Kibum explained.

“Oh.” Kevin nodded in understanding, interested in the details. “So, when do I appear? Do I have a big importance?”

Kibum chuckled with a smile. “Yeah, you’re just after the main character.”

“Wow!” Kevin clapped his hands, delighted. “So how do they meet?”

“The main character meets him in his new workplace. They work together, and although opposites, they sort of work well. When they have clashing opinions, the main guy would argue his way out and your character will basically take things in your hands even if the main guy doesn’t like it. You don’t like to argue, rather to do the real work instead and prove your point.”

“Hey, that’s kind of true!” Kevin gasped. “That’s why people like to do group projects with me, because that way they can slack off.”

Kibum chuckled, nodding. “Maybe. But you don’t get angry, anyway.”

Kevin pouted, making a face as he registered Kibum’s words into his head. “Maybe I’m too nice?”

“Yeah.” Kibum agreed instantly, chortling at Kevin’s sigh.

“So, it’s not a love story?” Kevin cocked his head to a side, wanting to know more.

Kibum’s words got caught in his throat. After frowning slightly to think of an answer, he nodded. “It is.”

Kevin thought that maybe authors don’t like giving out too much of their plots, deciding to move on. The girl character will work her way in somehow.

3. Why do you write in this café?

“I’ve never seen such a waiter.” Kibum joked. “You don’t want me to patronize this café anymore?”

“No! No!” Kevin anxiously shook his head. “I was just wondering what drew you here.”

Kibum fell silent, eyes gazing at Kevin so intently the waiter felt his heart skip two beats. One because Kibum’s eyes were so mesmerising, one because he realised those eyes were looking straight at him.

“You.”

Kevin thought he choked on his breath.

“Oh my, I was just kidding!” Kibum exclaimed, reaching out to pat Kevin’s back. “Hello? Can you still hear me?”

Coughing violently, Kevin nodded weakly. “Yeah, yeah, I was just shocked.”

Kibum smiled and nodded, as if understanding something else in his head. Chuckling lowly, he mumbled something about Kevin constantly surprising him with that cuteness no one can replace.

Kevin blushed bright red, biting his lower lip to slow down his heart’s racing.

“Well, the atmosphere here is pretty nice, and…probably some emotional attachment to this place. I’ve came here since two years ago, I guess habits can’t change.” Kibum shrugged, gesturing slightly at the café to prove his point.

“Wow, you’ve been working on this novel for two years already?” Kevin asked, truly intrigued.

“Of course not.” Kibum laughed, causing Kevin to feel embarrassed. “I told you before, didn’t I? I have had some really short stories written. They all originated here.”

“Oh…” Kevin looked at the café more closely, wondering how powerful this place really is. He scanned the room and saw everyone else doing their own things, probably also having their own story to tell.

“It’s interesting, isn’t it?” Kibum followed Kevin’s line of sight, watching different customers walk in and out, Dongho getting orders and slipping between tables and everything else.

“Kevin.” Soohyun stated sternly. “I’ll overlook the fact that you’re ignoring your job, but I’ve told you countless of times to not speak to customers, especially him.”

Shouldn’t it be the other way round?

Kevin mouthed an apology to Kibum, who shook his head and waved a little. He then bowed an apology to Soohyun, before quickly skidding off to work, looking back at Soohyun and Kibum curiously.

“I told you not to talk to my waiters that way. I meant it.” Soohyun growled softly, eyes dangerous.

“What way, Soohyun-hyung?” Kibum cocked his head to a side, questioning.

“Don’t call me that. I don’t know you.” Soohyun frowned, quickly walking away, turning back when he remembered Kevin. “Just don’t talk to Kevin.”

Kibum sighed, shaking his head. “I can’t promise you anything.”
