An argument on logic...

To properly prep this conundrum I'm about to speak on, I feel like I need to explain the initializing thought behind it.  While discussing my co-worker's pregnancy (Sunny is having twin boys, yea!), Zhanwei got on the topic of pregnancy.  Specifically how long a woman is pregnant.  Now who agrees with me that a woman is pregnant for 9 months?  Is ( Read more... )

Very interesting and thought-provoking discussion about cultural norms and the length of pregnancy/age!

With regards to when life first starts..."when the heart first starts beating" is an interesting time to choose. What's the rationale behind it?

one of my co-workers has been pregnant for the past 7 months, so i talked with her and some others about it and abortions and that whole messy business.

there really isn't much rational behind it (at the moment) besides i know if you're going to discuss this topic, it's important to define when you believe life starts. *shrugs* pretty much i think it's hard to say that life begins at conception because i heard somewhere that sometimes women get pregnant but then loose it after a month for no real reason...you can't morn or feel bad about something you didn't even know existed. also, i think it's too cruel to say a fetus isn't alive until it's born...that just doesn't seem right. the heart starts beating after the 3rd month...or something, so that just makes sense to me. granted i slept through most of biology, but the heart seems a pretty vital organ that defines life and since it's so hard to say when brain function begins, the heart is probably the best scientific evidence of life.
