Chapter 2: Few months later
“Good, very good! You improved a lot, Nino-kun!” Ohno praised the boy who was currently sitting on the floor sweaty and panting but smiling brightly at the instructor hearing his words.
“You really think so?”
Nino spent the last few months’ every morning with Ohno and his private dance lessons. Just as he knew from the start he didn’t find the chance or enough will-power in himself to clear him this misunderstanding. Or maybe he was just a coward for not daring to tell him… And with each passing day it was harder and harder so Nino pretended this problem didn’t even exist.
“Yeah, really. You should have more confidence in yourself!”
“I think you’re just infatuated, Oh-chan cause I’m cute” Nino teased looking up at the older man with twinkling eyes. He did look cute.
“Maybe you’re right” Ohno laughed. “Anyway, I think our time together is over…”
“Is it that late already?” Nino asked frowning and crawled to his bag to dig it through for his watch.
“No, I didn’t mean like that” Ohno shook his head.
“You didn’t?” Nino asked back still frowning, not getting what the older man would want to say.
“I meant you don’t need anymore private lessons. You can join to the other juniors from now on” he announced obviously satisfied.
“What? No, I can’t…” Nino started to protest shaking his head violently.
Ohno repressed a sigh and walked to the younger man.
“Nino-kun! Have more confidence! You’re good at dancing. No need to be afraid or ashamed of anything!”
Ohno tried to convince him but Nino just shook his head stubbornly the whole time.
“Nino-kun?” Ohno asked and reached out his hand to touch the younger boy’s shoulder but Nino jumped away from his touch.
“I have to go. I have an exam today…”
With this Nino grabbed his bag and ran out of t he practice hall, leaving the shocked Ohno behind…
In the next weeks Nino did everything he could to avoid Ohno. It wasn’t that hard. Simply not going to the jimusho would be enough. But it wasn’t that easy either… Nino was so used to going there instead of school that the next day he stood already in front of the huge building when he realized what he wanted to do. He shook his head quickly then turned away and headed running to the station to go to school where he should be in the first place…
From the following day Nino repeated stubbornly in his head ‘You’re going to school. To school, Ninomiya!’ in order to avoid the same situation again. That’d be the best if he won’t meet Ohno for a while…
“Yeah, the best…” Nino mumbled under his breath.
It was math class at the moment but as always none of the students paid attention to whatever problem the teacher was solving at the blackboard. Nino sighed again and pouted but forced him to pay attention to the teacher once he was here after all…
“So, what’s up, uncle?”
An hour earlier Johnny called Nino telling him to dress up properly and get ready till the driver arrives in fifteen to pick him up.
And now they were sitting in this fancy restaurant’s private room, waiting for their dinner to arrive.
“Well, since I’m busy we couldn’t really spend time together so I thought it’d be a good opportunity to catch up on things…” the old man said calmly. “Also, you’re school called me today…”
‘I should’ve known!’ Nino tsk-ed in mentally. The boy highly doubted his uncle would’ve wanted to catch up if the school would’ve not call.
“What did they say?” Nino asked pretending to be nonchalant though he did care about the topic. The last thing he wanted now, his uncle being informed about all those skipped schooldays…
“They very much satisfied with your progress. They also told you got the top on the exams last month”
Nino almost spit the water in his mouth hearing this.
Well, it wasn’t that hard getting the top since he was the only one who actually wrote proper answers so of course the teachers are happy! There’s at least one student at that institute mocked school who did study after all…
“Yeah, well… You know, I just did my job, uncle…” Nino started awkward. He just wanted to put off his mind of Ohno and kill his time with studying and not for getting praised by useless teachers or his nonchalant uncle.
“So, I thought your hard work deserve a celebration” the old man continued as if Nino said nothing.
“And that would be this dinner…” Nino stated instead of asking.
“I thought you might like that new Play Station 3. Sister mentioned you like those… consols…” again, Johnny ignored Nino’s words. “It should arrive by the morning tomorrow”
Nino’s eyes widened at this. It was true, he did like gaming and also wanted the new PS3 consol but didn’t imagined in his wildest dreams that his uncle would buy it to him on his own.
“Thank you, uncle! I appreciate it” Nino said when he finally found his voice.
“You’re welcome, son. Just don’t make me regret it- I expect you to work just as hard from now on too!”
“Yes, sir!” Nino grinned mock saluting which caused a ghost of smile to appear on the old man’s lips.
Soon after this they ran out of the topics they shared - which was not too many, obviously - but luckily as their dinner arrived, it made the silence less awkward. Nino studied his uncle silently, pretending he was busy with the food on his plate - which was less appealing as its price promised.
“So, uncle, the other day when I was reading through the company docs… I noticed these boys all learn instruments, right?” Nino spoke up still staring at his plate and picking on his food.
“Yes, they do” Johnny said raising an eyebrow at the unexpected chose of topic by his nephew.
“Well, I noticed they all study the piano, guitar, bass or drums… Don’t you think it’s boring?” Nino asked looking up finally and frowning at his uncle to strengthen his opinion.
“Well, they can form bands this way so we don’t need to spend money for hiring background musicians. It’s easier if I can train my boys to do the same…”
That was the money-orientated answer that Nino expected from his uncle.
“Yeah, I got that but still it’s boring!” Nino repeated. “Why don’t you try something new? Just one time, to see how it works? How the fans react… Just give a chance to innovation” Nino pressed this topic with unexpected enthusiasm.
Once again Johnny raised a brow at Nino’s behavior.
“All right, then. Enlighten me, son. What should we try out?” the old man asked leaning back in his chair, staring at the boy in front of him.
“Well… how about…” Nino put down his fork and leaned back in his chair as well, staring back at his uncle. “How about that boy, Aiba, playing… I don’t know… saxophone?” he asked pretending he came up with the idea just then and there, not planning it for months already, ever since he first talked to Aiba. “His debut concert is scheduled by the end of summer, right? That’s just enough time to teach him and test it out on the concert…”
“But why Aiba? He’s… very problematic…” the old man didn’t seem to be the fond of the idea.
“Well, maybe this is the thing he needs to fit in. You know, there are people who need to stand out to stop rebelling. Maybe if he sees he’s the only unique one to play the saxophone, he’ll calm down and… just fit in…” Nino said shrugging.
“Alright, son. Let’s go with this idea of yours but you have to take responsibility for this.” Johnny gave in after a few minutes of thinking. “Whatever the result would be!” he added warning.
“Yes, sir!” Nino said and grinned victorious.
Two weeks later Nino couldn’t find anymore excuses why he’s not going to the jimusho though his uncle expected him there for further adjustments on his ‘operation saxophone’ plan. As expected Nino tried to avoid this as long as he could but when his uncle said he’ll turn down the whole idea if he won’t come the next day Nino was left with no other choice than going and praying not to meet him. But Nino’s famous luck left him this time…
As he walked through the entrance hall toward the elevators he immediately noticed Ohno talking with one of the jimusho’s stylists at the other end of the hall. He quickly turned his glance away and quickened his steps toward his destination. He pushed the calling button several times as if that’d make the elevator moving faster and just when he glanced over his shoulder…
“Hey, Nino-kun…!”
Slightly frightened expression shown on the boy’s face when he heard the approaching footsteps behind him but before Ohno could reach him he jumped into the arriving elevator and closed the door. Guilt panged in his heart as he saw the door closing before the dance instructor’s pouting face…
Ohno couldn’t suppress the joy bubbling up in his heart when he spotted the oh, so familiar mop of black hair making his way through the mass of people in the entrance hall. When was the last time he saw Nino? Three or four weeks, no, almost two months ago! He was worried, yeah but also he had to admit that he missed the boy badly…
“Gomen, Jun-kun, I… have something important to do now…” he said quickly turning back to the stylist. “We’ll finish this later! See ya’!”
Without wasting another minute for the stylist’s answer Ohno rushed toward the elevators where obviously Nino was heading too.
“Hey, Nino-kun!” Ohno called for the boy hoping he’ll stop and wait for him but the younger barely looked over his shoulder, let alone stopping or waiting for anyone. Till Ohno reached his destination the metal doors were closing already causing him to pout disappointed but being left behind, ignored actually, wasn’t the thing what bothered, worried, hurt the dance instructor. No, it was that almost frightened expression in the boy’s eyes…
He needed to find Nino. He needed to talk to him…
Nino barely managed to slow down his hammering heartbeat and fight back the slight blush from his face when the elevator arrived and opened the door on his floor. Just as he stepped out the next shock of the day came, named Aiba Masaki jumping right onto him. Literally.
“Nino-chan!” Aiba hugged the other boy as if he’d want to crush the life out of him. “Guess what!”
“What?” Nino managed to choke out and trying to keep his balance with the taller boy pushing his body all over him. “And… would you… get off… please…?”
“Oh… gomen…” Aiba smiled a bit sheepishly and let go of Nino with faint blush on his cheeks.
“So? What’s up? I guess it must be good news…” Nino asked once he could breath properly again.
“No more piano! I’ll learn, guess what, the saxophone from now on!” Aiba broke the news triumphantly not having the slightest clue that it was all thank to Nino himself.
“Great! Good for you!” Nino patted the boy’s back grinning. “I gotta go now but I’ll drop by your place later” he promised smiling at his friend then quickly pecked his cheek before headed to his uncle’s office.
“Oh, okay. See you later, then!” Aiba waved at Nino before walked off the other end of the corridor still blushing slightly by Nino’s peck…
