Library Days

Well, I seem to have the library job. I got the call this morning from Mrs. G, who is damned tight-fisted when it comes to giving information out. I guess a million years of people asking where the Nora Roberts books are have taken their toll. I did manage to chip some info about the job from her and it's all (surprise, surprise) not nearly as ( Read more... )

Well, congratulations on the job, Kat! My LiveJournal Friends list is bursting with professional librarians -- including Maria ("pickupyourfeet") and Jerianne ("whysoblue")-- so welcome aboard. I'm sure they can give you plenty of helpful tips, AND plenty of library horror stories, if you'd like...

Hope everything goes well. Let us know.

Now it's too hot to keep typing up here, so I must retreat to the cooler downstairs climate, where my wife, my iced coffee, and a Wonder Woman DVD await...

You seem to have a perfect life. :)

I don't mind the job except for the clothes thing. And Mrs. G treats me like I'm 19 years old--which at my age I guess I should take as a compliment. But I don't.

Yes, I have a number of professional librarians on MY list as well, including annef, who like you is also a writer.

I totally understand about the Denim dress thingie.

Good luck. I'm glad you have options. And working in the library sounds pretty cool to me!

It's not bad. Dull, though, but the opposite of dull is workland is stressful, so I'll take dull. And I figure if I can stick this out, I can leave Mrs. G and her denim phobia behind for sunnier climes.

Hey, neat! Sounds really promising. $7/hr for 35 hours a week is indeed pretty light, but surely that can be adjusted eventually--a full 40 a week, a raise as your role increases, that kind of thing. And Mrs. G won't last forever.

Especially with an eighth of a teaspoon of arsenic added to her tea every morning. >:O

I think Mrs. G is probably immune to arsenic. She may even be made of arsenic. But yeah, the pay rate will undoubtedly go up soon. And I walked ot work today, which is great--good for me, good for my truck, good for my budget.

ooh, bummer.

the joys of rewarding work? books all around you all day?

Hope there's compensations to go with the dress code.

Ah, books books everywhere but not a thing to read! I have to "look busy" all the time, in fact, so I can't even stand behind the check-out counter with my eyes glazed working out plot problems in my own books.

The compensations are many, and after a few weeks I'm sure I'll be able to identify them.

Wanting to buy a denim dress... zoe_1418 August 1 2006, 14:35:11 UTC
If you buy a denim dress and wear it to work, we'll all pledge to get them too, and be the Denim Dress Librarians for Solidarity.

Of course, I am wearing *jeans* today in my library, and ones with a hole in them no less, and no one will frown or even notice. Then again, this is a university library, where life is Not Like It Is In the Real World.

Although even at my branch library out in my neighborhood, the staff wear whatever they please, as far as I can tell. And I'm so glad they do.

Then again, this is Madison, Wisconsin. Mrs G would have a fit of apoplexy should she ever step into one of our librarious dens of iniquity.

But congrats on the job, although it's not your ideal one. Maybe it will Lead Somewhere.

Thanks for the offer of solidarity, but I'm afraid Mrs. G would flare her nostrils and point out the door if I showed up in denim--even a nice denim dress with really cute embroidery on it. On the other hand, I noticed today that everyone at work is wearing open-toe sandals (with hose *shudder*), so at least I can wear all my cute shoes. With hose.

(Anybody want a peanut?)

Ha, Mrs. G called me today--on my day OFF--and asked if I could come in after all today. I told her I couldn't, and not only that, that I didn't think I could accept the job after all. This was after I'd emailed and talked to Mom quite a bit, and took her advice that the job was actually not much and probably not going to get better. Oh well, it was worth a try, and an interesting experience.
