“And just what do you little warriors think you can do about me?”
I had no idea, since I didn’t even know what it was. But I still stood my ground, Aoi and Uruha on either side of me. Then Uruha spoke.
“Its some kinda magic leech. It’s been siphoning off any magic the wizard uses. That’s why his spells weren’t working right.”
“Clever, Human. But you can’t stop me. Not with your puny weapons.”
And then it laughed, sending chills along my spine.
“Wizard, don’t use any magic.” Aoi called over to Kai, who just sat there, nodding dumbly.
If he wasn’t supposed to use magic, how were we going to fight it? But then again, how does one go about fighting a magical demon? Apparently Aoi and Uruha thought they could do it with steel. In the form of a sword and an axe. I wondered if I fit in, with my gauntlet. Catching Aoi’s eye, I got my answer. Crap. I was expected to help.
Aoi and Uruha adjusted their positions, forming a loose triangle around the creature. It just watched us. I think if it actually had a face, it’d be smiling.
“It doesn’t matter what you do.” The thing hissed at Aoi. “That wizard is mine. His magic is far tastier than those silly Dryads’. As well as having more power. It will sustain me, even if he doesn’t use any.”
Well, that sounded promising. I glanced at the man in question. He looked like he was about to be sick. But who could blame him? This creature had decided his fate, for better or worse. And it claimed we couldn’t stop it. I for one, believed it. But it seemed like Uruha had other ideas. He took a step towards the thing and swung his axe right thru it. The mist just parted and reformed when the axe went past. The creature laughed again.
“You are just wasting your time. But that is your choice. Please, continue.”
OK, I did not like being mocked by this thing. There had to be something we could do to hurt it. The way I saw it, all we had to do was get it to leave. Make it decide staying, using Kai for whatever purpose it had, was not a good idea. But how? I just couldn’t figure that part out.
Apparently Aoi didn’t like being mocked either. Surprise.
He stepped forward, sword ready. But instead of swinging it, he lunged, plunging the blade deep into the mist. He left it there, not pulling it out. And then he smiled. The mist wasn’t reforming around the metal.
Uruha seemed to get whatever idea Aoi had, because he did the same with his axe. Just shoving the blade into the mist below Aoi’s sword. Then he started spinning the handle. The creature wasn’t laughing now. Aoi had started shifting the pommel of his sword around, also causing the mist to swirl, but in the opposite direction as Uruha.
Aoi called over to me.
“Do you think you can do that bit, like with the dragon, only making it straight up instead of out?”
“I can try.”
I held the gauntlet up in front of me and closed my eyes. I tried to picture what Aoi wanted. A lance of flame shooting straight up from the ground. Going right thru the misty creature. I concentrated, pulling in heat and flame. I clenched my hand into a fist.
“Good, good.” Aoi encouraged. “Now make it thinker. Like a tree.”
OK. I think I can do that. So I tried to pull in more heat, more flame. It was hard. We only had a campfire for me to draw upon.
“You can do it, Ruki.” Uruha said softly. “We believe in you.”
Suddenly, I felt engulfed in a warmth like I had never felt before. It seeped into me, like I was standing in the middle of an enormous bonfire. But it wasn’t hot. Just pleasantly warm.
I held it a moment, trying to forge it onto the lance. And then, when I thought I had it, I let it go. All at once. I opened my eyes to see what was happening. I caught just the end. The creature, mist still swirling from where the axe and sword had been removed, was shrinking into nothing. The flames eating away at the mist. A large flame pillar standing where it had been only a second before.
I looked at the pillar and thought ‘go, back to where you came from’. And our campfire brightened as the pillar dwindled away.
“Wow.” Kai said, finally pulling himself back to his feet. “What was that?”
“That,” Aoi said, grinning at me “was Ruki.”
I felt myself blush, as Uruha came to stand next to me, throwing an arm around my shoulder.
“I don’t think it’ll be bothering you again. At least not for quite some time.”
“You mean we didn’t kill it?” I asked, just a bit surprised.
“I don’t know.” Aoi answered. “Can you kill something like that?” He asked the wizard. Kai’s answer was a shrug.
“So. What do you do now?” Uruha asked Kai as we all sat, drinking wine and watching the sunrise.
“Well, first I go back to Dulham and set things right.”
Uruha giggled “No more Stick People?”
“No. No more Stick People. And hopefully no more Dryads, too.”
“Could you use some help with that?” Aoi asked
“Only a fool turns down help” Kai answered seriously. But then he broke into a grin again. “Besides, I would love the company”
So it was settled. We were all going to Dulham. It was along the way for us anyway. And maybe Kai’d join us for the rest of our journey, too.
Hey, having a wizard around couldn’t hurt, right? Especially if he was any good. And I’m thinking that magic leech wouldn’t have bothered with him if he weren’t any good.
We’d get to see, firsthand when we reached Dulham.
