Two days later found us with our first real dilemma. No, the Auricks weren’t a dilemma, they were a problem. This was different.  We were standing, literally, at a fork in the road.  So the question was this: do we go thru the mountains or over them?  That’s not as simple a question as it sounds.  There are dangers either way.  Different kinds of dangers. And creatures, too. Some not as friendly as others.  That’s not saying any of them are really friendly, either.  Cuz they aren’t. Usually.  There are a few exceptions.  Very few.

They were the experts, not me. I decided to sit, listening to the two men argue over which way was better.  In my opinion, both sucked.  But that doesn’t really matter.  We have to get to the other side one way or another.

“But you know I hate spiders, Aoi.  Why are you being so difficult?’ Uruha was at it about the spiders again.  I’m not crazy about them myself, but I couldn’t understand why he kept going back to that same argument. So I decided it was time to ask.

“What’s the big deal about spiders? Yeah, they creep me out, too.  But if that’s the only problem with going thru the mountain..” I trailed off.  Uruha did not look happy.  Oops.

“What’s the big deal?  Have you ever seen any of the spiders in the mountain?” I shook my head.  Of course I hadn’t.  I’ve never been this far north before.

“Well let me clue you in.  See this?,” he said, holding up his shield. “One spider can get bigger than that.  Much bigger. And they’re aggressive, too.  They’ll come straight for you. No hesitation.”

“Are they afraid of fire?” I asked, thinking of my weapon.

“Oh, you wanna go in and try frying ‘em up?  Be my guest.  I’ll just go over the mountain and meet you on the other side, then.  If you make it out in one piece, that is.”

“Uru~” Aoi tried to sooth his partner. “Come on, they aren’t that bad.  And you know it, too.  Those Rock Golems up there are a lot worse.” He said, pointing towards the mountain peaks.

Rock Golems?  I didn’t like the sound of that, either.

“Don‘t tell me. They’re big, hate humans and your weapons don’t hurt them.”

“Good guess,” Aoi said, looking back at me. “Metal barely leaves a scratch. Even his axe.”

So my choices were large spiders underground or Rock Golems at a very high altitude. At least I wasn’t claustrophobic or afraid of heights.  That’d really suck. As much as I’d like to think I could fry the spiders, I wasn’t really sure.  We’d be underground, in tunnels.  Probably not very big ones.  If the spiders came at us from the front and back, we’d be trapped.  Sure, I could hit both sides, but then we’d be stuck between the flames.  That really didn’t sound like fun to me.  But then again, the spiders could be stupid, like the Auricks.  And then they’d just attack, en masse. No, that didn’t sound good either.  I was liking this trip less and less.

“Um, guys?  Are these Rock Golems really that bad?”

“No”

“Yes”

“Aoi~.  Just because you can’t kill them with that sword of yours doesn’t make them bad.  We just avoid them” Uruha said the last to me.

“Is that possible?” I asked, skeptically.  You’d want to be sure too, right. I mean, Uruha’s no chicken.  I could tell that right off.  Nothing seems to phase him.  Except these spiders he keeps talking about.

I had convinced myself that I wanted no part of something that bothered him. So now I needed to find out about these other things.  Why didn’t Aoi want to face them? He wasn’t a coward either.

Uruha answered while Aoi just scowled.

“It’s not easy, but it is possible. If we take things slowly, no quick movements, we should be OK.”

“Should be? You mean you’re not sure.”

“Well, nothing is certain in life.  You should know that better than anyone, Mr. Fire Gauntlet. But there have been lots of travelers that make it over the mountains without even seeing one.  I don’t see why we’d have  any problems. As long as we’re careful”

So I was a little reassured. But only a little.  We were going to face something that neither of my new friends could kill, but that wouldn’t stop these Rock Golems from trying to kill us. And Aoi still didn’t look very happy, even though he finally agreed to go over with us.

If I knew him better, I’d say he was sulking.

I tried not to laugh. He probably wouldn’t like that.  And who knew what either of them would do if I happened to piss one of them off. Much better to keep my thoughts, and my amusement, to myself. Just in case he’s the sensitive type.

Walking behind them, I felt a smile tugging at my lips.  What the hell? He’s in front of me. So I’m probably grinning like an idiot, walking behind Mr. Cheerful and Mr. Sulking.

My good mood didn’t last long. We had just made camp for our first night on the mountain when the rain started. It was almost midday of the next, and it didn’t look like the rain was going to stop any time soon. New danger, slipping in the muck.  So I was walking slower.  I felt bad, holding things up.  But I really didn’t want to fall.  Who knew how far I’d end up sliding.  So the way I saw it, I was actually saving time. But I don’t think the others saw it that way.  Uruha was at least trying to be encouraging.  Aoi was just scowling.  Not at me, personally.  He was scowling at everything in general.  The sky.  The muck. The mountain. Uruha’s back. Nothing was safe from his glare.  Too bad it wasn’t as dangerous as it looked.  Then we wouldn’t have to worry about anything trying to attack us.  Aoi could just scowl or glare at them.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. Unfortunately they heard me. Both men stopped, turned and stared.

“What could you possibly find funny about this?” Aoi asked with the scowl finding it’s way to me.

“Well, ummm actually, it’s your scowl. It’s too bad we can’t use it as a weapon.”

Turning to his partner, Uruha smiled “That’s it. The rain’s washed his brain away.  We should find shelter before it does the same to us.”

I actually liked that idea.  The rain was starting to get to me.  Maybe not as bad as Uruha was making it out to be, but still.  So we went from trying to quickly, quietly get over the mountain to trying to find a spot out of the rain.  And the wind, too.  I was getting cold. A cave would be nice.  A nice, deep cave.  With some dry wood for a fire. Yeah, that would be great. And maybe after I got warm Aoi would show me more moves with the sword. I really want to do my share.  And I don’t want to let either of them down.

Damn, I think I’m starting to like them.
