I have a grandmother that used to treat me as less than her other grandkids because she doesn't like my mum. Dad stopped visiting because her husband is a bastard and used to beat dad when he was younger. So I heard nothing for a few years. Now I get cards, signed by her and my half-uncle who never liked me, saying "we love you come visit us."
They've visited me twice in my entire life. It's a half hour drive. I drive longer to get to uni each day.
But I send photos occasionally, and little notes like this one "One of my best mates just got gold in the Commonwealth Games! As well as a silver, and a bronze" because I know it shits her.
doesn't that piss you off more than anything, the whole pretending to care thing? If you don't give a fuck, then at least openly ADMIT you don't give a fuck! The head games piss me off more than the abandonment.
Same. Especially seeing as it's because she doesn't like the fact my mum had a better upbringing than she gave her kids. Apparently she liked my dad's first wife - who was an alcoholic he was married to for about 3 years from the age of 17.
I have fantasies of getting married and not even telling my parents about it.
but it's something that always has this power over you. If your parents don't care whether you live or die...it's really hard to get to a point where it doesn't bother you any more. I think it will always bother me.
I think it is part of growing up that we discover that our parents are disappointments to us in one way or another. With that comes the realisation that they will never change. Once we accept this, it is somewhat easier to move on and our disappointment and anger fades.
Having said this, we are moving in with my parents in 21 days. YIKES!
