It's not a music room, it's a band trap!

When last we spoke , me_maneuver and I had just impulse purchased a piano. On Tuesday, they dropped off said piano, and spent some time on Wednesday (I had the day off for M's birthday!) setting up her music studio. It's sort of RIDICULOUS? It wasn't until we got everything out and set up that I began to realize just how many instruments M's collected over ( Read more... )

I want that room! Mostly I want that piano! I learned on a piano like that. We had it for years, and I was very sad when my mother got rid of it for a smaller one. I no longer even lived within 3 hours of her, but still...I was attached to that old thing. She said it was too heavy to be moved about, and she wanted to put a piano in the living room, so out it went. :(

I know - I ADORE the room, even if I don't have any use for it. We've got a "living room" loft area upstairs for the TV and the couch, so it's just M's teaching room, but I do so like the impression it makes when you walk in the front door. Plus, all the open space and wooden floor/ panneling make everything sound amazing - it's sort of like living inside a guitar?

We're figuring the piano is about 80 years old, and HEAVY, so I can imagine not fun to move, though it is always so sad when the favorite things from your childhood are put out to pasture!

a) it's like a mouse trap, but with less death and cheese, and more awesome band boys? They'll wander in, and never want to leave, and shall just make us musics forever!

b) me too! I'm sort of annoyingly fond of the entire house, but that's the room that made me go *WANTS* when I walked in. And it makes such an impression when you open the door? HARPS! (now I'm going to have to go back to explaining to the pizza guy what harps are. We had them tucked away in a bedroom in the last apartment, so I'm out of practice)

c)I sort of covet them for ME, too. I'm normally a pretty slow knitter, but I love the PROCESS, so if you want to toss me a ball of yarn (which, in this stuff, is like $5), I might be able to finish a pair before it gets cold enough to need them?

Oh I will buy you yarn and pay you (even if you only let me buy you and M a round of drinks or coffee). Crafters must be supported!

What kind of yarn/how many skeins do they take?

I run into this crazy issue with mid-price yarn where I am FREAKISHLY allergic to wool, so these were just in the slightly nicer craft store acrylic - which is SOFT and comes in lots of colors, which you can see yonder , and is less than one skein - I think this was the leftovers after 3 pairs of these . It's less than $5, and I can definitely trade for a cup of coffee :D

If you want something NICER/ WARMER/ NATURAL FIBERY, I can poke around for something I can touch that will work for the pattern? It wants to be wool, sadly :\

Love the gloves! I've just favorited that pattern. I haven't been knitting for a while here, but it usually comes on like a physical need come fall. I mean, some years I knit compulsively year-round, but when I do suddenly take a few-month break, it comes roaring back like a tsunami once the weather cools a bit.

Your house is looking gorgeous! I learned to play the piano as a child on an upright like that one, but I brought no musical skill or talent with me into adulthood. I would still love your music room, but abstractly, as art.

I tend to knit when I get NERVOUS - so there was MILES of knitting in those last months of house buying, and at cons. And also all winter, as I am hilariously terrified of the cold? I've been trying to take a few weeks off, with working overtime and tiring out my hands, but I need SOMETHING to do while watching TV/

The piano in my house as a child was LIME GREEN and a former player piano that had been reconverted, and no one was allowed to play it. I am happy to now be near a piano that is not RIDICULOUS? Even if I'm far too much of a left to play at all.

ETA: I have a pdf of that pattern from back when it was a free download. If you ever want to make it, and don't want to spend the $3, I can wing it your way.

I'm not much of a songwriter either! I'm hoping to use the room to lure those who can play into coming to my house?

Sometimes, patterns are just stubborn and AGAINST YOU! No matter how much sense it makes to other people! I'm sure the cardigan will be lovely once it is done, and no one but you will notice the added "character"?

What an awesome music room! Love the guitar signed by B.B. King.

Seeing the harps reminded me of when I was in high school - my choir teacher once said that harpists have to be especially careful of hearing damage so that they don't lose the ability to hear high notes. Do you (or M) know if that's actually true? I've always wondered, and it's a hard thing to Google.

Ummm... hi. *waves*

Thanks! I love that guitar! Not only is it pretty, it's a replica of his, which I find awesome. :)

I'd actually never heard that harpists can lose their hearing before. However, it doesn't surprise me as it totally makes sense. My college professor has lost most of her hearing (even though she won't admit it). I also have hearing issues, but that was mostly because I used to get ear infections as a kid and have had some surgeries to "fix" it. Ha.

So, I'm not sure if it is hearing high notes or, you know, ANY notes. :) The harp is so close to our ear and we tend to play so loud that I'm sure this is an issue with some of us. I have a sneaking suspicion that our right ear takes the brunt of the punishment, but I'm not sure.

Hmmm... how interesting! :D

The B.B. King thing is via my mother-in-law, who has this THING for memorabilia that I don't quite get. It sort of makes me a bit sad that we've got this beautiful instrument that no one does more than look at, but I poke it sometimes and remark that it is VERY VERY PRETTY.

Those harps, surprisingly loud. I wouldn't put it past them to be hearing killers!
