I can see why you think it was too long and ambitious, but the cuts I would make would be to the mob stuff with Lao and that shit. I think the Joker/Two-Face two-shot was necessary to the movie and its thesis, as you noted. I also agree that there were multiple points where I thought the movie was over and then it kept going, but I didn't mind that. I loved the sustained intensity.

As for the boats, people have posited that scenario, but I think the Joker would more likely want the people to live with their murders because that was the whole point of what he was doing. But then again, maybe he just wanted to prove his own point and it wouldn't matter who lived as long as someone died.

And Maggie Gyllenhaal was great, yes. And pretty.

Anyway, I'm loving it more the more I read about other people loving it, and your critique was very well stated and really was not as squee-harshing as you might have expected it to be.

You know what? When I was done writing this, I realized I liked it a lot more than I thought I did upon first reflection. I loved it for the potential it had, even if it didn't quite reach that for me. It tried, and it tried beautifully.

(Also: Hi! How are you, baby?)

Ha, you know, it's funny because as I was reading, I could tell you actually really liked it a lot and did not have an "unpopular" opinion so much. I was surprised that you gave it a "B," but maybe that's my personal bias against Bs. I would have expected a B+ or A-, given that you seemed to really like the movie but for a few things that could have made it an A+.

Busy as shit.

Um, not busty as shit. That's you.

Running five bookstores yet?

I actually have avoided all reviews and discussions of the movie, because I like to remain virginal and unspoiled, so it was strange that I would automatically assume my opinions would be unpopular.

I AM busty! Thanks for noticing. But also uber-busy. I am only running the one bookstore (did I tell you? I got promoted again. It's totally my store now - I am the boss lady!) but it feels like five stores with my budget cuts. Stoopid economy.

I would have loved if those democratic upstanding citizens had pushed the button. And I would have loved it if they would have blown themselves up when they did so.
That was actually what my friends and I were expecting to happen. I was surprised by the guy in the civilians boat walking away from the detonator. I completely agree with your take on Rachel though, Gyllenhaal did a lot with very little.

Hee. I thought I was being omgsosubsversive with my boat idea.

I think maybe part of the Gyllenhaal's charm was how awesome she looked in all of her vintage-y outfits. I am also loving her even more sinse I saw Stranger Than Fiction a few weeks ago, which she rocked. But yes, I think she did such an amazing job. Imagine if it had been Katie Holmes. No bueno, right?

I loved it a lot but I could not help thinking at the end that Two Face deserved his own film and was sort of wasted in this one. The Joker was villain enough by far and I agree that we got far too little of Bruce, all things considered. I wish that Harvey would have just faded away after the explosion and then popped up in the next film because a whole story of Batman trying to deal with him, knowing everything he knows, would have been just as delicious.

As for Rachel, I agree about MG bringing more to the role but I think the character sucked from the beginning, Katie Holmes or not. Mostly because I think any woman that turns down Bruce Wayne is a stupid fool. Also, Bruce is married to Gotham and I wish Hollywood would stop forcing love interests at him for the sake of supposedly drawing women to the films, you know?

I could write a book (in multiple volumes) about why love interests for superheroes will never work for me, especially if it's the same old tired retread of a vaguely saucy but ultimately one-dimensional love interest, whose only purpose is to be a source of angst so that the hero can brood prettily, until finally, her propensity to be kidnapped/killed perfunctorily moves the plot along.

I did like that Rachel distracted The Joker from taunting the older guy at the party, and was kind of ballsy but still terrified. But man, I want an uber-kickass lady in one of these movies.

I felt the same with the escalating denouements... there were at least three moments I felt like the movie was ending and then looked at my watch see there was still at least an hour left ( ... )

I love the idea of Maggie as Batgirl! I feel like she would totally eschew the Batgirl outfit - she'd insist on wearing slinky vintage gowns whilst fighting crime.

This movie is def. making me more talkative than I would have thought.

She'd be the Katherine Hepburn of Superheroes... fighting crime in widelegged pants and heels and cutting the boys off with witty barbs.

I almost wish that would really happen now.

Oh, MAN. Now I totally want to do a superhero movie with Resurrected Dead Awesome Movie Stars. Katharine Hepburn, Guys and Dolls era- Marlon Brando, James Dean, Marlene Dietrich ... they could all wear pantsuits and smoke and fight crime and be delightfully bitchy. Dorothy Parker should be there, too.
