EDIT: See this is why livejournal needs that facebook "like" thumbs up option. It's a simple way to acknowledge an entry without requiring something witty or insightful to say.

Yes, but I still think there's a great need for a "dislike" button. If someone posts to say there cat died I don't want to "like" it!

On Metafilter, when someone dies, most people comment with a period to acknowledge it.
