Xboxing

I'm crawling out from under being a grad student long enough to say that I finally bit the bullet and picked up an Xbox 360. Despite its quirks (having to be plugged directly into the wall, which annoys the ever-loving hell out of me given that my house is full of stuff that must be plugged in and I have surge protectors in nearly every outlet), I' ( Read more... )

You do. I'm hoping to have the real game by the end of the week.

yay new katamari! i wish i could play that. bioshock does look amazing, but i've shunned first person shooters ever since wolfenstein because i get too freaked out. i wouldn't make a good soldier.

also, yay polysics! i hope they tour the US again. they've come to town twice and i've had to miss them both times.

Wolfenstein was the point that I gave on the FPS genre, too, but for different reasons. I thought the controls were frustrating, and I could never figure out where I was. I've tried the Metroid Prime games, but got tired of them after a couple of hours. But Bioshock has held my attention all the way.

The Polysics are touring the U.S. on some Myspace thing. Myspace Records (I can't believe such a thing exists) put out a sort of best of comp that has a few tracks of their new album that isn't out in America yet.

If the Conan game is not subtitled Conan, drugs, and camel-abuse then it might be a no-go for me.

That's a lie, if it lets me BE Conan and kill things (pretty much anything is how I envision it) then I'm fucking in.

Ok, I played the Conan demo and get this: in the instructions, the B-button function is "Camel Punch". It is actually a move in the game. So I'm guessing there are camels in there somewhere (though none in the demo).

I'm just hoping there is a "have sex with a witch then throw her onto the fire immediately after climax" minigame.

I also would be more interested in Xbox Live than in the "actual games." Lots of good stuff in the M$ stable. While Virtual Console is cool, it's possible to have a lot of that stuff via emulation (though doing so is not exactly legal).

Is Settlers of Catan a hardcore strategy game or more casual-ish? I've never played the board game. I was jealous when I saw that in the Live list on Wikipedia a few months back.

I'd say Catan is sort of mid-range. If you've never played before, it will take you an hour or so to figure out all the rules, but after that, it's basically Monopoly with resources instead of money. You trade the resources to get what you need to build roads and cities. Of course there's a lot more to it than that, but I'll spare you the whole explanation. But I'm happy with how the video game conversion has worked out. Trading resources is fairly easy, and all done without having to put on a headset and listen to people talk.
